Hi MNers!

It’s the final countdown for our little girl due in a few weeks and we hesitate between Lucy and Esme!

Which one do you prefer and which one feels the most popular/common to you?

They’re close in the rankings of 2020 most popular names and I would like to pick the less common if possible, so keen to have the opinion of other mums :)

Full name would be:
Esme Lucy Ross
Or
Lucy Esme Ross

Thank you!! Flowers

@ILoveStickers where did you find those brilliant maps?
I think I prefer Lucy Smile

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/02/2021 12:34

Lucy

WitchWife · 06/02/2021 12:35

Can’t stand people saying “Esmeeee” rather than Esmay so I’d go for Lucy.

HenriettaHeffalump · 06/02/2021 12:47

I know an Esme in her late 70s who is an Ezmee! Always assumed that was the original pronunciation and Esmay a variation.

But whatever, yes, there are pronunciation issues with Esme, which is worth considering.

ShinyGreenElephant · 06/02/2021 12:48

Lucy Elizabeth is beautiful and classic. Esme is a lovely name but very trendy so more likely to date imo. I would go for Elizabeth as the middle name either way. Congratulations!

DancingQueen85 · 06/02/2021 12:51

Lucy Esme sounds better

Bloominggoodvibes · 06/02/2021 12:54

I prefer Lucy.

Esme is a very pretty name but has been so fashionable over the past 8 years or so I think
that Lucy is a less common option.

ellenpartridge · 06/02/2021 12:55

Lucy is miles nicer than Esme. Lucy Elizabeth is great

Biscuitsneeded · 06/02/2021 13:12

Lucy Esme flows better than Esme Lucy IMO.

Peachbubble · 06/02/2021 13:32

Lucy 100%

@cafedesreves

More info here (scroll down a bit for the maps).

I realise now that what I shared was out of date! The new one is here:

You can only generate maps for the top 100 or so, I think, but it's still fun.

CakeRattleandRoll · 06/02/2021 13:48

Love Esme.

2020Peepshow · 06/02/2021 14:47

Thanks everyone! I feel like Lucy Elisabeth might be the winner

Lucy Eliza/Elizabeth

alexdgr8 · 07/02/2021 02:56

Lucy Elizabeth.

definitely. that's a fine name. the other suggestions less so.

Tuscadero · 07/02/2021 04:45

I don't think Esme will date badly. Names that tend to date badly are those that suddenly become wildly popular out of nowhere, like Tracy, and then drop away suddenly again. A 2020 equivalent might be something like Wren?

But Esme is a very old name so should avoid the same trajectory.

All that said, I prefer the name Lucy Grin

Tuscadero · 07/02/2021 04:48

Not sure I meant to include that grin!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/02/2021 04:52

Assuming you are pronouncing it as "Ez- May", then I much prefer Esme over Lucy. I find most names that end in an "ee" sound (even ones as classic as Lucy) quite cutesy sounding, so I'd rather be an Esme than a Lucy. Btw Esme Elizabeth as suggested by pp is gorgeous!

2020Peepshow · 07/02/2021 12:45

Thanks for all your suggestions! Still undecided but food for thought.
Now have the new alternative of Esme Elizabeth. Would then either be Lucy Eliza Ross or Esme Elizabeth Ross.
