Lila Verity/Ottilie/Rosalie etc - what do you think?

This name will be pronounced “Leela” like the European pronunciation. And absolutely dislike the “Leela” spelling so the name will be spelt as Lila, I’m not too worried about pronunciation issues as correcting it once will solve this. The name Lila has a lot of sentimental value for us due to connection with a grandparent. What do you think about Lila?

Middle name options:
Lila Verity
Lila Valerie
Lila Rosalie
Lila Amelie
Lila Annelie
Lila Audrey
Lila Hermione
Lila Julie
Lila Elodie
Lila Heidi
Lila Ottilie

Lila is a pretty name but if you’re in the Uk you’ll find there are a lot of them, all pronounced Lylah not Leela.
I’m not sure ‘correcting once will solve’ it, as everyone will automatically say it the way you don’t want.
Is there any way to spell it so that it reads as Leela, apart from Leela?
Lee-la
Leila
Leala

I'd have Lila as a middle name because she will get 99.9% of people mispronouncing it and it'll drive you mad. Rosalie is a really pretty name and will suit an adult as well as a child.

I'd go for the Leila selling. Lila will get a lifetime of people calling her Lyla and spelling her name Leila.

There are so many similar names around like Lily, Lyra, Lara, Lola, Delilah, Layla, Mila, Lena and so on, I'd call her Verity instead.

spelling not selling

Valencia34 · 21/01/2021 11:52

@KirstenBlest Wouldn’t Leila be seen as an Arabic name pronounced as Lay-la?

I would 100% pronounce "Leila" as Layla. Spell it however you want - but be prepared that correcting it once won't solve it. The combinations with middle names are all beautiful. My favourites would be Lila Ottilie and Lila Heidi.

riotlady · 21/01/2021 11:57

Yeah I would assume Leila was pronounced Layla, I would spell it Leela to get the pronunciation you’re wanting

ParisJeTAime · 21/01/2021 12:01

Lila is lovely! I also like the Leila spelling, although it might get pronounced Layla.

Lila Verity is nice. I have a soft spot for virtue names as middle names!

ParisJeTAime · 21/01/2021 12:04

If you want an alternative, there is also Mila, which is more likely to get the correct pronunciation.

There are an awful lot of Lilahs / Lylas where I live atm, so Lila may just get lumped in with those...

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2021 12:32

@Valencia34, the arabic is Laila. - rhymes with Isla.

Chilldonaldchill · 21/01/2021 12:57

I do know one Leila pronounced Leela but all the others I've known are pronounced Layla.
I know several women of Persian origin who spell it Leila and I always assumed that was the correct spelling.
I think Lila will get half and half Leela and Lyla but I think people will learn your way. I agree Leela doesn't look nice.
I like Lila Verity or Lila Anneli.

Edenember · 21/01/2021 15:38

I agree people will only need corrected once, but i feel in this country that’s going to be a lifetime of first time corrections which will get tiresome very quickly. It’s just too popularly pronounced Lyla and that will be the default. Your choice, but I think the constant correction and potential frustration as a result is significant to consider. If you’re decided I’d go with one of the three syllable middle names, they’re all nice, perhaps one which doesn’t start with a vowel would roll better after Lila.

FluffyEggsontoast · 21/01/2021 15:50

How about Delilah

AuntieStella · 21/01/2021 16:00

If you go with Lila, I'd not have another name with two pronunciations with it

So scrub Rosalie which could start roz like Rosalind or rose

Of your list, I think Valerie flows the best
