Saskia or Scarlett

DH & I still have 4 months to go until first DC. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing given how wildly our liked names are changing.

We think we like Saskia and Scarlett but not sure if they sound too harsh. Also, (and could be an obvious reason to rule it out) we’re debating whether Saskia is pronounced Sah-skia or Sas-kia (hope this isn’t too ridiculous a question).

Grateful for any thoughts on these two names

Two of my favourite girls names so feel like you can’t go too wrong with either. Maybe keep them both in mind and once she’s here I’m sure you’ll know which one she is. By the way both are well known but not well used where I live (perfect combination), best of luck!

They are very different styles of name imo!

Saskia is pretty and has an exotic, slightly highbrow image to me (Rembrandt's wife etc). I pronounce it Sass- kee - ah.

Despite knowing a lovely Scarlett, it kind of has the opposite image as a name for me - I struggle to get past the Scarlett woman thing.

Much prefer Saskia.

KirstenBlest · 18/01/2021 19:11

Saskia. Short a.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 18/01/2021 19:50

Not keen on either tbh but if I had to choose it would be Saskia , too many Scarletts .

alexdgr8 · 18/01/2021 19:52

definitely not Scarlett.
who would want a scarlet woman in the house

Don’t be daft. It’s a perfectly lovely name. Who looks at a young girl called Scarlett and thinks “Oh they have a scarlet woman in their house”? Confused
cafedesreves · 18/01/2021 21:30

I would pronounce it Saskia but my mum says Suss-kia. Lovely name 🙂

Bluesername · 18/01/2021 21:47

I like Saskia and have only heard it pronounced SASS-kee-a. Scarlett is OK but I don't like the Scar sound (prefer Charlotte).

EvieBoo2 · 18/01/2021 21:50

I like both but think I prefer Scarlett.

SemperIdem · 18/01/2021 22:40

Saskia (not Sahskia) is really quite nice and different.

I really don’t like Scarlett.

partyatthepalace · 18/01/2021 22:48

Sass - kia

Quite like both - would go for Saskia as a lot of Scarlets about.

🙄
Retrogal · 18/01/2021 22:50

Saskia is a lot classier than Scarlet

Wide · 18/01/2021 22:52

I have a cousin named Saskia who is in her late twenties, pronounced Sas-kia

Wide · 18/01/2021 22:53

....Sas for short is what she is called

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 19/01/2021 01:44

I love them both! Saskia is more rare so would choose that. Pronounced sass-kia

Tavannach · 19/01/2021 02:10

Saskia.

mathanxiety · 19/01/2021 04:29

Saskia by a country mile.

Pronounced Sass-kia.

custardbear · 19/01/2021 04:41

Saskia (sass Kia)
Scarlett is lovely but more common and people will mix with Charlotte

DramaAlpaca · 19/01/2021 04:45

Saskia by a long way. Beautiful, classy, historic name. Rembrandt's wife's name, too.

Scarlett doesn't have the same vibe at all.

Dinosauraddict · 19/01/2021 05:34

I never usually say this but I don't like either of them I'm afraid. The pronunciation issue would put me off Saskia, and Scarlett just had connotations of a scarlet women which is not what I would want for any daughter personally (sorry).

MercyBodle · 19/01/2021 06:02

I love both names, but would choose the more unusual Saskia.

babynamelover · 19/01/2021 06:04

Saskia a million times more than Scarlett.
I also like Sasha.
