Alice?

Any thoughts on the name Alice? Our DS has a classic English name and hoping this will match? Alice didn't immediately spring out at me but it's really, really grown on me recently. Classic, not twee, hopefully won't date like the resurgence in 'old lady names' (Ivy, Edie etc) and hopefully not too overused?

I'm aware there's a song people don't like but I'd honestly never heard of it until looking at baby name boards so wondering if it's quite an old song?

I have been thinking about Alice for DC due soon (if we have a DD of course!).

I've seen several threads here recently asking for views on it and it is rising up the popularity list, which puts me off.
My name was popular when I was born, so through school /brownies /college I always had someone with the same name around. It did me no harm, but I don't like the idea of picking a name which is too popular. Maybe I'm setting too many rules!

Living next door to Alice is my dad's karaoke song. I may have to ruin it for him Grin

Love it but on the fence!

Lovely name for girl

emmie841 · 13/01/2021 09:48

Alice is such a beautiful name. Elegant, refined, a very pretty name.. I'd describe it as 'the little black dress' of girls names. A timeless classic that doesn't date x

StealthPolarBear · 13/01/2021 09:52

Has no one heard of Alice what's the matter? That to me is much more famous than the awful one.
Also resident evil :o dh tells her that's who we named her after

BikeRunSki · 13/01/2021 10:14

Has anybody actually heard the Roy Chubby Briown song for 20 years though?

Other nicer Alice songs -
Alice’s Restaurant
Living Nextdoor to Alice
Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore
Alice, what’s the matter

Don’t let a chubby Yorkshireman spoil the name!

emmathedilemma · 13/01/2021 10:35

I love it but I will warn you that all the ones i've known are absolutely bonkers (in a good way but mad as a box of frogs!)

Remaker · 13/01/2021 10:42

I love Alice! I know one who is around 40 and my 14yo DD has a friend called Alice. It’s also DD’s mn and she loves it too.

I think it’s a beautiful name that will stand the test of time, not like some of the names that are popular at the moment for their old lady vibe, but actually aren’t very attractive names.

Sandsnake · 13/01/2021 10:46

Lovely name! Would have used it for DD but far too close to DS’ name to work. It’s classic and pretty sounding but also dignified and not cutsie.

YesPleaseMary · 13/01/2021 10:53

It's a beautiful name. I have one! And yes she is mad as a box of frogs.

formerbabe · 13/01/2021 10:55

I actually find Alice incredibly twee.

Disfordarkchocolate · 13/01/2021 10:59

It's a beautiful name. It goes well with lots of other names too.

oneboy3girls · 13/01/2021 11:11

Wanted to use it .But A ...........lice,put me off .Went for something very similar.

insancerre · 13/01/2021 11:23

Thanks all- definitely wasn't expecting so many responses! To the poster who said anyone over 25 would have heard of the song- I'm over 25 and had never heard of it before looking at these threads!

I'm also hoping that it doesn't become too popular!

Now looking at Alice in wonderland stuff for the nursery Smile

And thanks to those agreeing it's not a 'twee' name and won't date- like the so many of the popular names at the moment!

Absolutely love the name Alice and it meets all your criteria perfectly

Teakind · 13/01/2021 12:36

I love the name Alice. Classic and pretty.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/01/2021 12:40

Alice is the ultimate "English" timeless girls name (apart from Elizabeth) - as far as I'm aware it's rarely left the top 100 since records began in the 1300's (apart from a brief period between 1950's -70s). So it is incredibly unlikely to date (there should be a fair amount Alice's of all ages) and if your son has a "classic English" name (I'm assuming James, Edward, William or the like) it should match very well. The song wouldn't bother me personally, as Alice is well known enough there are lots of other references.

Spidey66 · 13/01/2021 12:42

I love it. I think it's timeless.

Leo674 · 13/01/2021 13:19

I've never heard of the song! I love this name and would have loved to use it but it doesn't go with our surname! Also like the nn Allie as well

googlesit · 13/01/2021 13:54

I really like it!

AnxiousAnnie86 · 13/01/2021 14:14

@bumblingalonghappily awwww an Alice in wonderland theme would be lovely!! X

bourbonne · 13/01/2021 14:18

@AriesTheRam

Anyone over 25 would think of the chubby brown song
I'm comfortably over 25 and Alice is a completely normal name to me. I would have no reaction to it at all. The songs I'm aware of are "who the f is Alice" and "Alice the camel", but I wouldn't think of them upon hearing the name.
bourbonne · 13/01/2021 14:19

And it's a nice name.

Terracottasaur · 13/01/2021 15:21

I think it’s absolutely lovely

pinkmarmaladejam · 13/01/2021 15:38

Love it, DH didn't, but I still do.
