Andie for a girl?

I like it, think it’s kind of effortlessly cool. DH thinks it’s a name used only for boys.

What do you think?

Makes me think of the Goonies so I secretly love it. Having said that, I'm generally not a fan of nicknames as given names because it doesn't give a child much leeway if they don't like the nn as an adult. Do you like Andrea for the BC?

Sexnotgender · 10/01/2021 21:44

I like it.

2me2u2u2me · 10/01/2021 21:48

I love it, super cool name for a girl and also not popular. My son
has an unusual name for a boy (usually a girls name) he likes it and only one in his school Smile

GlitterBiscuits · 10/01/2021 21:48

No. Your DH is right.
What else is on the list?

EileenGC · 10/01/2021 21:51

It's ok. Nickname for Andrea perhaps?

Emelene · 10/01/2021 21:51

I think everyone would hear Andy and presume boy. But I'm not a fan of boyish names on girls anyway personally.

Fckingfuming · 10/01/2021 21:52

Sorry, can't think of any way of saying 'ANDIE!' without shouting (from The Goonies) 😂

ItsJustARide · 10/01/2021 21:52

My first thought was Goonies too. Like it though.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/01/2021 21:53

Nickname for Andrea-lovely still

stoneysongs · 10/01/2021 21:57

I agree, effortlessly cool. Not such a fan of Andrea but I probably would put that on the birth certificate even if we were only ever going to call her Andie. Gives her the choice later in life.

stoneysongs · 10/01/2021 21:58

(Unfortunately I couldn't ever use it because it's the name of my brother's ex wife, who dumped him.)

duckoutofwater · 10/01/2021 21:58

Makes it think of The Devil Wears Prada and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Both great movies though 😉

galaxy9 · 10/01/2021 22:01

If it was spelt “Andy” would you use it and think the same? I used to really like the name Rae for a girl, but now I just think of a man in the pub called Ray!

Robbybobtail · 10/01/2021 22:02

I love it. And one of my fave characters EVER - Molly Ringwald as Andie in pretty in pink - so cool😎!

No one calls their boys Andy these days anyway so I don’t think it’ll be thought of as a boys name by her peers.

2me2u2u2me · 10/01/2021 22:05

What about Andie McDowell, gorgeous too!

CrocodileFondue · 10/01/2021 22:07

There's an Andie in Dawson's Creek too, quite like it for a girl but I'd go with it as a nickname personally. Andrea is nice and due a comeback?

MercyBodle · 10/01/2021 22:09

I like it. It makes me think of Andie McDowell. I'd prefer it as a nickname, eg for Alexandra, but I like it as a full name too.

Flupibass · 10/01/2021 22:09

My dad calls me Andie, ....I’m female. I like it.

Aanndyyy you Gooonie!! Is the first thing I thought of too! Grin
It not a bad thing though!

I like it.
I had a friend all through school called Andrea and we all called her Andy.

BiscuitTea · 10/01/2021 22:18

I'm an Andi as a NN because my name is unpronounceable! I sometimes get surprised voices on the phone expecting me to be a boy but it's no big deal

whereisthejoy · 10/01/2021 22:45

Love it!

ChrissyPlummer · 10/01/2021 22:56

I used to work with an Andrea who was only ever known as Andie. It suited her, but she did have the option at least.

I’d definitely give the full version though. Andie MacDowell’s name is actually Rosalie Anderson MacDowell. I’ve never seen ‘Pretty in Pink’ but I’d imagine the characters full name is Andrea, same as the Goonies I believe.

partyatthepalace · 10/01/2021 23:27

Well not as a full name

But as a nn for Andrea - or better as a nn for nicer names like Alexandra or Adrianna then all good.
