Elsa

I've loved the name Elsa for a a very long time. It ticks a lot of boxes for me: familiar without being overly popular, and no issues with spelling and pronunciation. But then Frozen was released.

So is the Frozen reference still too overwhelming seven years later? I don't have small children so I'm a bit out of the loop as to whether Frozen is a bit passé now.

Would using Elisabeth with Elsa as a diminutive work - giving options to revert to one of the many non-Frozen nicknames or the full name if she grows up not to love ice queens? (I'm not usually a fan of working backwards to make a nickname work but I like both Elsa and Elisabeth)

Don't forget there's a character in American Horror Story: Freak Show called Elsa Mars!

I like Elsa but I couldn’t deal with all the let it go comments

What about Ilsa?

Sounds like Elsa but just different enough that people might not think

Its a lovely name and there's plenty of children called Wendy, Peter, Alice, Robin, Charlie, Arthur etc etc who have done just fine. This is the issue with having the good names; there are other people who have them and stories with characters named as them.

Having grown up with a really weird name that no one had but me, it would actually have been nice to have had a book hero or two to share a name with. Parents tend to like uniqueness more than children do.

And yes, she's going to get the occasional twit singing Let It Go at her and asking her to build snowmen - there are many, many worse things!

My dog was called Elsa but had the name since 2001 ,. No problem first years ,but later on when Frozen came out everyone thought I'd named her after the character of the film🤭

I knew if one born not long before the first movie and felt terrible for the parents at the t ins. I don’t think it’s a no no, as it’s already a name. You/she just might have to put up with a few comments.

ZebraKid71 · 05/01/2021 20:42

I know one born a year before the films.. at first her parent's hated it but now frozen is so popular that I think it has put a lot of people off using it so there aren't many around.

The connection isn't going anywhere but its not a bad association and a lovely name.

I like the idea of using it as a nickname for Elisabeth.

Teakind · 05/01/2021 23:10

It’s a beautiful name but my first thought was ‘do you want to build a snowman?’

Bluesername · 05/01/2021 23:31

Elsa is a lovely name. I only know of one young Elsa so I'd say for for it.
