So we've now got a short list for baby number two. Still not sure if boy or girl, was wondering what your thought were on our chosen names?...

Boy:
Sidney or Rowan

Girl:
Lois or Rosa

Rosa and Rowan love them both. Lois is growing on me as well come to think of it

Sandcastles09 · 29/12/2020 19:52

Rowan or Rosa!

DramaAlpaca · 29/12/2020 20:09

I'm not mad on Sidney. Rowan is OK, but I think it has a more feminine feel.

I like Lois and Rosa.

Superstardjs · 29/12/2020 20:15

Like both the girls names. I like neither of the boy names, Sid is redolent of Cockney geezer, though future generations will not know Sid James. Rowan, for me, is like Francis, it sounds like a thin, pale child.

PlantPotting · 29/12/2020 20:38

I really like Sidney, it's outside the top 200 names too so not common yet is an established name. I like it's meaning
Rowan is my baby girls name. Pros: nice pretty nature name. Cons: I didn't realise how much it's risen in charts nor how popular Roman is becoming. There's lots of similar names so I sometimes I feel like it's not special enough, especially when I'm asked if the name is spelt with a W, N, H or M in the middle. I don't like the natural shortening to Row.

I really like both of your girl names. Preference for Lois as I like it's meaning and think it's more distinctive.

CaffiSaliMali · 30/12/2020 08:52

I really love Rosa.

Which pronunciation of Lois are you planning to use, the English (low-iss) or the Welsh (loyce)?

I like Sidney and Rowan although I think the latter is increasingly popular and also increasingly used for girls which may or may not bother you.

CaffiSaliMali · 30/12/2020 08:54

Scrap that, dark greener suggests Rowan is still mostly used for boys: names.darkgreener.com/#rowan

PlantPotting · 30/12/2020 10:33

Yes Caffi it is an interesting one. As you say it's currently still used predominantly for boys in England but the name is solely used for girls in Scotland. The girl (and boy) graphs for the name in America are going steeply upwards too so I wonder if it will transition to be seen as a girl name some time soon, the way names like Hilary and Kerry have in the past. It's about to enter the top 200 names for girls in America. Throughout history, once a threshold number of girls get given a names it stops being used at all for boys. We will see
I see it as a girls name but that's because it's my daughters name. The tree itself is fairly small, pretty and dainty which lends itself to a girls name in my head. Pretty pathetic of me to gender a tree, I know.

LastChanceBalloon · 30/12/2020 10:34

Your boys names aren’t to my taste, but I LOVE your girls names. Both beautiful.

Sheleg · 30/12/2020 13:50

Sidney is a dirty old man name.

The others are nice.

daisypond · 30/12/2020 14:34

I only know female Rowans. I like it a lot for a girl. Otherwise Rosa, but I prefer Rose.
Not keen on Sidney or Lois.
