What are people’s opinions on the name Forrest?

DH and I have looked through hundreds of names lists and we just cannot find one that we love.

So we are trying to find a name that means something to us instead. Forrest is my grandma’s maiden name.

Also Forrest is a fairly uncommon name and my DD has a fairly popular name which I’m not sure if that would be strange.

I’ve never heard of that group before.

I like Forest and River (but wouldn't be brave enough to use them). It would definitely be a name chosen for what my DH and I like (i.e. nature), and I'd be praying a little Forest wasn't actually a gamer who was allergic to the outdoors.

@TheRealBoswell I think they're pretty outdated now! For obvious reasons - not envy!

They seemed to be around in the 80s-90s a lot. Just sticks in my mind, such a nasty association for what should be a nice word!

Lovely name without the extra r, good taste supporting best football team in the league, Nottingham Forest.

To avoid the association with other people/things, you could perhaps spell it differently - Foryst, Forryst? Although, some people are a little snobby about alternative spellings so you'd avoid one criticism/mock for another.

Don’t put a y in it, the poor kid will spend their life correcting the spelling.

The film is almost 30 years old. By the time your Forrest is of teasing age the film will be over 35 years old. I would have thought the chances of teasing based on Gump to be pretty slim.

I personally wouldn’t. I know I said this already on the other thread but Forrest was the name of one of the founders of the KKK who was also a prominent confederate general. The character Forrest Gump is named for that general and it’s actually mentioned in the film. The actor Forest Whittaker is a Forest not a Forrest. I’d avoid Forrest for the KKK link alone.

Forrest Gump came out in the early 1990s. Name one kid under 10 who has seen it.

I think it's a lovely name. Go for it.

Ha - it’s a 12 certificate and totally unsuitable for under-10s.

I’ve said this before but don’t underestimate the extent to which Forrest Gump references endure through memes etc. I teach teenagers and have been surprised at how many of them are familiar with it - see also Castaway.

I didn't get Gump but still think not a great thing to do to a child. Unless he gets really tall and likes being called tree.

My first thought was Gump and I wasn't around when the film was. Certain aspects of pop culture endure! One day it will die off but, it seems, not yet.

I like it! Our son's name is quite unusual and is also associated with a character, but I can honestly say it doesn't bother us (and I'm sure DS won't care either!) I think when it comes to picking your child's name as long as it isn't something outright offensive then don't worry about other people's thoughts - in my experience people will always have an association with any name be it good or bad!

Forrest Gump is a go to film in secondary schools in history...generally skipping the racier parts. I can't see that changing too quickly, so just be aware of that.

I really like it, and as your grandmother's birth name it gets bonus points!

I don't see any issue with your dd having a more popular name. Names don't have to match in popularity, but I think it's great when sibling names have a similar feel or vibe, while at the same time having their own distinct personality, something that's hard to put your finger on but you know when it happens!

What?!? It’s a stripper’s name? Forrest? Well, I guess in reality I wouldn’t know as never went to a strip place but I thought the names were things such as trixie, Chardonnay, Tiffany, Crystal, diamond and made up names like irredessa.

Yep - well in fact she was a waitress in a stripper bar but had aspirations to be a stripper hence the stage name.

She was a nice girl mind you.
