Ennis? (we're in Ireland)

Is it a no-go because it's a place name?

One English, one Irish parent. Looking for a name that is easy to spell/pronounce in both countries. I think it would be fine in England (not sure that many would know the place) but not sure about it in Ireland.

Not necessarily looking for an Irish name and definitely not looking for something unusual, but we fell in love with 'Innes' (scotish origin which has no significance to us) for last son, until someone said 'like guiness without the G?'. So we didn't use it.

Could go with Ellis, but not as keen.

I knew an Ennis from Grenada! Nice name.

My dad is from Ennis, and I think if you’re in Ireland it would be weird. There are plenty of easy to spell/pronounce names that travel well between the two countries.

Clara is popular here in Ireland and that's also the name of a town, so I don't see why you can't use Ennis.

Ennis isn't far from me, it's a lovely little town.

SionnachRua · 23/12/2020 15:37

It would get a lot of "oh, like the town?" comments. Personally I wouldn't, it's a bit jarring. Clare, Kerry, Shannon, Tara etc are all very commonly used names so very different to Ennis imo.

I know it's a place name/surname but you might get the odd person pronouncing it as EE-nis (like penis) rather than ENN- is. It also isn't a particularly nice name imo - but admittedly I prefer much more traditional Irish/English crossover names like Sean, Patrick, Aidan, Michael, Wil(liam) etc. Ellis is slightly more my taste - at least it's a more common surname (although I prefer similar sounding Lewis, Bennett or Elliot personally).

Admittedly I'm not Irish but when I see Ennis all I think is penis and anus. Sorry!

Firebird83 · 23/12/2020 23:06

Too much like penis.

EuphieKat · 24/12/2020 02:02

I went to school with an Ennis (and not once did it make me think penis or anus...Hmm£

miserableannie · 24/12/2020 02:24

No where ever you are. Awful.

MadameMiggeldy · 24/12/2020 02:35

It hasn’t quite reached name status like say Tyrone or Kerry.
Nothing objectionable about it just a bit strange for a name. Be like calling your child Stoke or something.

MadameMiggeldy · 24/12/2020 02:36

Although Ennis as a last name hasn’t done Jessica any harm.

PonyPals · 24/12/2020 02:48

First thing I thought of is penis
