Elina, Elena, Eliana or Alina?

We want the El-eena pronunciation. Love the name Eliana and we like that it can be shortened to Anna or even Elina. Thoughts? British Greek/Italian family. We are open to any other names with similar sounds. I don't like Eleanor or Helen however.

I love Alina. Please have your kid use her full name though - I sometimes have four Ellies in a class and it's easier to remember who is who if they use their long names.

Seatime · 21/12/2020 11:13

Elena is lovely, the more simple spelling and pronunciation work.

StoppinBy · 21/12/2020 11:14

When I saw Eliana I read it as EL E ARNA, I don't thing you should spell it that way if you want it to be pronounced EL EENA, phonetically it doesn't work but I do love the name Eliana read out as above.

I think Elena would be mispronounced to EL A NAR.

I like either Elina or Alina but thing Alina looks prettier when written down.

Littleyell · 21/12/2020 11:14

Alina I have only heard that once in real life and that was during childhood.

I know a little girl called Elin. Gorgeous girl and gorgeous name.

TreacleHart · 21/12/2020 12:00

I know a girl called Alana , and thought that a lovely name.
Of yours Elena and Eliana .

unchienandalusia · 21/12/2020 12:24

Eliana is very pretty.

DramaAlpaca · 21/12/2020 12:26

If you want the el-EE-na pronunciation, spell it Elina.

MercyBodle · 21/12/2020 12:35

Alina.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/12/2020 19:54

I much prefer Alina. I'd pronounce it Ah - LEE - nah. It's lovely and very international, but not overused in the UK. If you want the Eh - LEE- nah pronunciation, then go for the Elina spelling but I think it will then blend into all the Eleanor's and Ellie's out there.

You might get away with Eliana because the emphasis is on the "ah" sound rather than the first "el" syllable ; but unfortunately El - names are so popular now, that anything other then the most common UK spellings (so Eleanor or Ellie) may well get misspelt/mispronounced as people will assume.

SpamIAm · 21/12/2020 20:02

I wouldn't assume Elena was pronounced the way you'd want - I'd assume ell-AY-nuh or possibly ell-ENN-uh.

For your pronunciation I'd go Alina, looks prettier than Elina.

CrispySeaweedIsReallyCabbage · 21/12/2020 20:05

I like Eliana, but it is a lot like Allanah / Alanna. It also might get shortened to Ellie, which is a bit ubiquitous I think...but then any of them could end up as Ellie. Alina less so.

There is Elara / Elora as well.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 21/12/2020 20:09

The only Elena I’ve met was pronounced like Helena without the H. For el-ee-nah I’d spell it Elina.

Blueroses99 · 21/12/2020 20:12

I really like Eliana.

To get El-eena pronunciation, I would choose Elina because Elena has several other ways of being pronounced (including El-lay-na, El-en-a). Alina is pretty but would be Uh-leena (similar to Anita) rather than El-leena.

Nell96 · 21/12/2020 20:48

If you want the el-EE-na pronunciation, then Elina would make the most sense. Have you thought of Selena? Or just Lena?

Firebird83 · 21/12/2020 23:52

Alina

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 21/12/2020 23:54

I love Alina. I know one and she's absolutely adorable. I also love Eliana.

thefinn · 22/12/2020 14:42

Alina is very pretty

Ellmau · 25/12/2020 17:54

People won't pronounce Elena the way you want.

I'd go with Alina.

CaffiSaliMali · 26/12/2020 09:21

Agree with others that Elina is most likely to be pronounced the way you want. Alina is nice too.

Elena is lovely but most people would pronounce is as El ay na or El enn a.

I think Eliana is my favourite.

TheSilentStars · 27/12/2020 09:17

If you want the "Eleena" pronunciation then you want Elina, surely?
I know an Alina (Polish) but that's a definite "a" at the beginning and not an "e".
Eliana is very common here in Italy and is considered a bit Chardonnay (sorry! It's just that it's very trendy)
