Hi lovely MN,
My husband likes Octavia and I like Saskia.

We like the unusual aspect of these 2 names. Both work well with our surname (by the way we are not posh at all Grin)
Just curious to know which out of the two you'd pick?

Octavia

On first thoughts, I prefer Saskia. I love how it looks written down and for some reason it makes me think of fluffy snow boots Grin But a previous poster said Tavi as a nn for Octavia, and it sounds good.

Saskia

ThatDamnKrampus · 18/12/2020 19:26

I much prefer Saskia. The first thing I thought when I read Octavia was a car Blush sorry!

familyof4boys · 18/12/2020 19:40

I love both but Saskia was top of my list for a girl so that wins my vote!

unmarkedbythat · 18/12/2020 19:43

Saskia. Very Sloaney but I really don't like Octavia at all.

Odile13 · 18/12/2020 19:46

I prefer Saskia

isadoradancing123 · 18/12/2020 19:50

Why do people choose beautiful names but then think what the nn will be, why have a nn

superstripeysocks · 18/12/2020 19:51

Octavia

OldLang · 18/12/2020 19:59

I had the misfortune to know a man named the male diminutive of Octavia who referred to his penis as Tavi Jr Envy NOT ENVY! Awful man for a number of reasons though..

DasPepe · 18/12/2020 20:01

We have a Saskia :) named after an older one we’ve known.
Obviously totally biased but it’s a lovely name. It was also the name of Rembrandt’s wife :)

Saskia

They are both fabulous names. I suggested both of them for our daughter but DP wasn’t so keen.

I was reading a story to my DD last week, in which there was a character named Octavia. Every time I read it out, it was such a treat. It sounds so beautiful, and feels lovely to say. So elegant. Yes, it does sound rather posh - wonderfully posh! Women named Octavia don’t care about the car association, because they’re much too posh to have heard of that make of vehicle. Grin

Saskia is pleasingly posh, too, but has a slightly more mischievous feel to it, I think. It sounds like the name of an intelligent woman.

I’m not sure which I prefer. Either way, you can’t go wrong. Fabulous choices!

Saskia

MercyBodle · 19/12/2020 03:36

I love both names. As the full name I would choose Saskia, though with the delightful Tavi nn I really like Octavia.

FartnissEverbeans · 19/12/2020 06:34

I love Octavia! I like Tay as a nickname, or Vee/Vivi. I think you could get away with those.

Saskia is nice too

PussyMalanga · 19/12/2020 20:33

Both dreadful! Sloaney pony names.

Sunflower0000 · 20/12/2020 19:41

We've just named our DD born on the 8th Octavia!
The feedback on this thread is really interesting but we're still in love with her name.
We love the Roman connotations as Rome is our favourite city. I had no idea about the car and only one person mentioned it, it doesn't bother me as I figured Clio, Elise and lots of other names are cars.
Her name has been well received so far. We've taken to calling her Taya or Tava for short.
Saskia is also nice so don't think you can go wrong with either!

Brighterthansunflowers · 20/12/2020 23:02

Definitely Saskia, not keen on Octavia

BlackLambAndGreyFalcoln · 20/12/2020 23:03

Saskia if pronounced correctly. Otherwise Octavia.

Brighterthansunflowers · 21/12/2020 20:10

@BlackLambAndGreyFalcoln

What’s the correct pronunciation? Im trying to imagine a different way to say it and can’t but I’m crap at languages so it’s probably me Blush

Daisy829 · 21/12/2020 20:14

Definitely not Octavia although they are a great car. I loved mine, it’s not a name I would choose for my child. I like Saskia though & you don’t hear it often

Hope4theBestPlan4theWorst · 21/12/2020 20:18

I used to work with a woman with twins called Ophelia and Octavia
I personally prefer Saskia

But all 3 are nice

Nell96 · 21/12/2020 20:30

Saskia is better, but I don't like either. Octavia is very posh and I just don't like the sound of it. Saskia is very frilly and as pp mentioned, sounds quite 'sloaney'. Other names which you might like:

Ophelia
Isolde
Anoushka
Aurelia
Alexandra
Antonia

Scottishflower · 21/12/2020 21:51

Saskia. X
