Opinions On These Names?

festivebug · 24/11/2020 11:12

Just want to get some opinions on these girl names. I'll post boy names separately to keep this shorter.

River - I think I prefer it for a girl.
Sunny
Indiana
Sabrina
Quinn
Joely - Like Holy, but with a J.
Avery
Luna / Lena

I love Hazel, Ivy and Mila but I think they are becoming to popular now? I also love Penelope but don't like Nellie or Penny so I don't think I'll be able to use it.

I’d pronounce Joely as in Angelina... Like Holly but with a J would be Jolly wouldn’t it?

Not really to my taste but Sabrina, Quinn, Luna and Lena are quite nice. I really wouldn’t want to be called Sunny.

Like Holy not Holly!

I like Joely although the spelling seems odd. I thought it was Joley.
Luna and River are nice too. But that's because i like the Harry Potter and Dr Who references Wink

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 24/11/2020 11:22

Actually Joely looks more right than Joley so ignore that bit Grin

fitzbilly · 24/11/2020 11:24

River I like
Sunny to much like the boys name Sonny
Indiana I actually really like
Sabrina no
Quinn I like this
Joely - Like Holy, but with a J. This will get mispronounced all the time. Reminds me of Dom jolly so a bit too jokey for me
Avery no, I just think of birds
Luna / Lena not a fan myself.

fitzbilly · 24/11/2020 11:27

Sorry I thought you meant Holly too, but joely pronounced like holy is actually quite nice.

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 24/11/2020 11:31

River I like it for a girl
Sunny not keen
Indiana not keen
Sabrina I like
Quinn sounds more boy to me

Joely - nice
Avery I like

Luna / Lena not keen

My favourite of your names are Ivy and Penelope (I know a couple of Penelope's and they never get shortened)

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/11/2020 11:33

I think Ivy is becoming popular but I wouldn't say Mila or Hazel are. Hazel is gorgeous yet understated. It's lovely. Mila feels a bit trendy, despite its not being overly popular

River - I like it on somebody else's child, though don't think I'd want to be called in personally. I do prefer it for a boy though

Sunny - not sure. Would they feel a lot of pressure to always be happy or face jokes

Indian - like it but prefer on a boy

Sabrina - lovely, has a classic feel to it

Quinn - OK, again prefer on a boy

Joely - Like Holy, but with a J. - not a fan. Makes me think of Angelina Jolie

Avery - don't like it sorry

Luna / Lena - these seem quite popular, I know more Luna's than I do Ivy's for example.

festivebug · 24/11/2020 11:54

@ThirdTimeLuckyIHope I had made a post previously on Penelope and most posters were saying it would get shortened, so now I'm really unsure. 😕

@17caterpillars1mouse Mila is definitely popular in my area unfortunately. It's one of my favourites though. I wasn't quite sure if Hazel was or not. I know of 3 but don't know any personally. I do think Luna is becoming a bit too popular as well.

Like Holy not Holly!
Haha oh yeah!
Well in that case, I think it’s decent name. I’d rather be Joely than Sunny or River.

Rosesaresweet · 24/11/2020 12:56

I like Luna and Sabrina.

Quinn is a boys name imo like Finn. Often short for Quentin.

Nell96 · 24/11/2020 13:26

River - I know a little boy called River, wasn't sure at first, but it's definitely grown on me. Thin it would suit either a boy or a girl
Sunny - no, a bit twee
Indiana - eerie Indiana
Sabrina - love, top of my list for a girl
Quinn - posh boy's name
Joely - quite like
Avery - birds
Luna - quite like, but starting to feel dated
Lena - ok, prefer others like Lyra and Lila
Hazel - like, pretty, underused, though always reminds me of rabbits, not sure why
Ivy - lovely, I know one - also love Iris
Mila - no, feels a bit trendy
Penelope - ok, love Nell as nn

festivebug · 24/11/2020 13:45

I'm surprised so many of you think Quinn is a boys name. I've only ever known it as a girls. Grin

OP posts:
FippertyGibbett · 24/11/2020 13:46

I love Quinn for a girl.

formerbabe · 24/11/2020 13:49

Really love Sabrina, Luna and Lena

Avery is a nice sound but I just think of birds

Sunny and River I see as boys names.

Joely is awful, sorry!

Kenana · 24/11/2020 14:15

It's funny seeing Mila written down. I often never see kids' names, only hear them, so for years I've been teaching a girl I thought was named Miller.

festivebug · 24/11/2020 14:53

@Kenana
GrinI know some people pronounce it that way but typically it's pronounced Meel-ah. (Like Mila Kunis)

OP posts:
CorianderQueen · 24/11/2020 17:28

Avery, Quinn and Sunny are all nice enough. The rest are awful

forgetthehousework · 24/11/2020 17:34

Sorry, but:
"We named the dog Indiana" (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade)

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 24/11/2020 17:40

I absolutely love Indiana!

Pudding01 · 24/11/2020 18:17

I don't know what it is, but I'm starting to like Hazel at the moment! Underused, classy and pretty.

Of your list, River Smile

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/11/2020 20:00

I think we have quite different taste in names, as the only one of those I really like is Sabrina - which is unusual but has a long history (and I also secretly like River which is one of my "hippy" guilty pleasure names for either sex).

Hazel and Mila are okay, but the others are either too trendy or nicknamey for my taste. I like India though (over more frilly Indiana), Sunny as a cute nn for Susannah, Lena as a nn for Helena etc.

Brighterthansunflowers · 24/11/2020 20:21

I like Joely but not keen on the others on you main list

I like Hazel and Mila though

DramaAlpaca · 24/11/2020 20:21

I like Sabrina and Joely.

I'm not keen on the rest. I particularly dislike Sunny, Quinn and Avery.

Chilldonaldchill · 24/11/2020 20:40

River - not keen at all. It's ok for a boy. But a bit naff nowadays for either
Sunny - "Delight". Am I showing my age? It sounds like a description and I don't like it
Indiana - no. Indie or India are nice but Indiana will just constantly get asked if she's got her whip
Sabrina - ok. Teenage witch but ok.
Quinn - not keen at all
Joely - quite like this one
Avery - very American but one of the better American names!
Luna / Lena - love Luna, not keen on Lena
