Hi, looking for opinions on the below names. Neither my OH or I are British however we plan to stay here so don't want to choose a name that leaves our precious daughter at the risk of bullying.

Our top 3 are:

Selma
Ella
Anna

What's your thoughts? :)

I love Ella and Anna. They are traditional, classic names, I think they are very pretty. I'm really not keen on Selma!

Anna

But you can surely choose a name that reflects your heritage? Unless you have a tonal language like Mandarin which really is difficult. (And all the Chinese people I know have Chinese name as well as European alternate).

August20 · 23/11/2020 10:30

Anna is lovely. I also like Ella but Anna slightly pips it in my opinion.

Selma is far more unusual. There's nothing wrong with it exactly but it makes me think of Selma from The Simpsons.

However I would say what is your heritage? I don't think there should be a problem giving your daughter a name from your country of birth.

MumChats · 23/11/2020 10:34

Love Anna :)

Danini · 23/11/2020 11:40

Thanks all - I am Swedish and OH is Albanian, so Selma would fit us both in regards to heritage, but so would the other names as well :)

Not Ella, far too popular. I know 15 of them.
Anna is lovely.

blowinahoolie · 23/11/2020 11:43

Anna. Beautiful name.

OnionMarmalade88 · 23/11/2020 11:45

I prefer Annie Grin

PeskyRooks · 23/11/2020 11:45

Love Anna and Ella. Don't mind Selma but what about Alma?

Quercus3 · 23/11/2020 19:04

I quite like Selma, you don't hear it very often and it's easy to spell and pronounce! Would be nice to be a bit different.

Otherwise my favourite is Anna, classic and travels really well.

Least favourite is Ella but it's still pretty.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/11/2020 19:32

Anna is gorgeous, very classic and international, but not overused. I'd use Anna personally, unless you really love one of your other choices.
Ella is lovely but currently pretty popular in the UK (along with the similar Ellie and Eleanor, so your daughter's name may blend into many).
Selma is more unusual and as a pp mentioned could remind some kids of the Simpsons.

Firebird83 · 23/11/2020 22:53

Anna or Selma.

BackforGood · 23/11/2020 23:10

I don't think a child is likely to 'be bullied' for having a not very common name - or that would be more than 1/2 the population.

Anecdotal and not data I know, but I personally only know two babies born in the last two months, and as it happens, they are both called Anna. So I don't known if it has become very popular this year ?

DramaAlpaca · 23/11/2020 23:34

Ella is over popular and quite bland.

Selma isn't a very attractive sound.

Anna is perfect.

Enough4me · 23/11/2020 23:36

Selma or Anna.

HeadlessGummyBears · 24/11/2020 04:17

Congratulations! Selma or Anna are both lovely options. The former brings to mind Selma Blair and Salma Hayek and the latter has an option for more nicknames.

I do think if you’d like to have a middle name that’s a nod to your culture might be a middle ground. But that’s completely your choice Flowers

MercyBodle · 24/11/2020 07:33

I like all of them, but prefer Anna and Selma.

CaffiSaliMali · 24/11/2020 10:39

I would go with Anna, it's timeless, classic and very international, it's the kind of name you can't go wrong with. Anya is also nice.

Ella is a nice name but feels less international than Anna.

Selma has a nice sound but my first thought is Patty and Selma from the Simpsons.

MotherOfDragonite · 24/11/2020 10:42

Anna is gorgeous and works well in so many languages across the world.

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/11/2020 11:34

I like all of them. I really love Anna and Selma but Ella is nice too, though more popular

Whatsyourflava · 25/11/2020 07:25

I love Anna or Ella
Lovely choices
