Filler middle names

I just don’t get the hate for filler names (Rose, Marie, Grace, Mae/Rae) Maybe this is a sensitive subject for me because both my DD and myself have a “filler” name but it’s not something that has ever bothered me.

I just find it so strange the derogatory comments that come from these names especially on MN. My DD has a middle name that is my MIL’s name and I once had a comment on here which was “yeah sure it is 🙄”.

I don’t understand when they are middle names why people get so worked up about using popular names that are popular because they go well with all names when once they’ve been introduced at birth, you never hear these names again.

Would love to hear people’s opinions on this.

I sometimes regret giving my DS a very bland "filler" middle name, I'd have liked something more interesting but it was a nice thing to do for my grandfather who did a lot for us so I consider that more important.

I think they are just filler middle names. In my age group it was Ann(e) or Jane, then all baby girls seemed to be Firstname Louise.

They seem a bit pointless because of overuse.

I think you don't always know when something is going to be particularly popular. When my daughter was born and named the midwives told me it was years since they had a baby called that in the hospital. When I registered the birth, the registrar said the same. But there are loads of them in her year at school (she's the oldest). So there must have been something whizzing around subconsciously making us all think 'that's a nice name'. I've often thought about what it might have been but I don't know - there were no prominent celebrities with the name and no royal babies.

My daughter’s name was considered an old lady name and provoked very mixed comments at the time. I just checked and neither of her names was on the ONS top 100 in 1984 which is the closest to her year of birth. By 1994 her first name is just outside the top 50 although no other old lady names are appearing yet. Her second name still isn’t there. Now her first name is popular and her second beautiful name is one of the above ‘filler’ names.

My middle name is Marie but my first is one that I don't think anyone else has. My nickname (shortened version of my name) is still uncommon but I have heard it and it is (although a different spelling) the name of a main character in some disney movies.

My oldest has a very common first name and a middle name that I made up as a combo of my grandfather's names.

Middle child has 2 old-timey names, but the middle also acts as a combo of my birth and adoptive moms' middle names.

Youngest has 2 odd names. One from a movie I like and the other from a tv show.

It never occurred to me to give a shit what anyone else thought about my choices.
