Boys-

Otis - nice
Flynn - not keen on the sound...think it's the fl- part...too like flab or flacid (sorry)
Finn - nice, but a bit boring
Jasper - nice
Casper - lovely
Chester - dislike
Ralph - don't like
Fraser - don't like. Too like razor.
Marley - ok, not my favourite

Girl -

Florence - nice, but v popular a few years ago
Marnie - dislike
Edith / Edie - nice. Edie is popular, as is evie, so I probably wouldn't aim to shorten it
Erin - bit 90s...ok, but not my favourite genre of name
Margot - love. Think it's popular, but I love it so that wouldn't put me off.
Nancy - really nice
Mabel - nice
Phoebe - ok. Bit boring.
Indie - bit too trendy for me. Think it will date badly.
Felicity - nice
Alice - nice
Olive - very nice. I don't know any; people say it's popular on here, but I haven't met a child with this name yet
Nova - not nice. Reminds me of caravans

Suggestions:

Otto
Rory
Gabriel

Ophelia
Saskia
Romilly

Constance1 · 14/11/2020 09:16

Chester, Mabel and Indie are the only names I don't like from your list.
Suggestion to add would be Felix, Otto, Tabitha and Beatrix.

Chilldonaldchill · 14/11/2020 09:25

Otis - I like this, is uncommon but recognisable. In a couple of decades of school runs/sports etc I've only met one Otis who would now be 14
Flynn - I really like this and it's much less popular than Finn
Finn - I like it. I do know a lot.
Jasper - I love it. Again it's not popular but it's recognisable. I think it sounds really cool (even though I know that using the word cool really isn't cool!)
Casper - I like this too
Chester - I don't like this one. Surnames as first names are a dislike of mine
Ralph - I like it if pronounced Rate in which case I'd just spell it like that. Ralph makes me think of Lord of the Flies and Piggy
Fraser - it's ok. The one I know is in his 40s and loads of people try and call him Frasier which he hates
Marley - I really dislike this. It seems very different from your other names. It always makes me think of grumpy people (maybe because of mardy?) It feels much less stylish than the other names.

Florence - lovely.
Marnie - really dislike. Feels like Marley above
Edith / Edie - gorgeous.
Erin - I'm not a big fan personally
Margot - I like this but it's suddenly having a revival. I think there will be loads of little Margots
Nancy - lovely
Mabel - lovely but again I think this is relatively popular
Phoebe - I can't bear this. Reminds me of "feeble"
Indie - I like this. It's not my style but fits well with the other names you like
Felicity - gorgeous
Alice - lovely
Olive - nice

Your boys' names feel as though they're trying to be "different" much more than the girls.
I would go for Jasper for a boy and Edith for a girl (my tastes) but probably Jasper and Nancy or Indie if it was important to be slightly quirkier.

Other similar names:
Jago
Otto
Evan
Lucien

Merryn
Elowen
Carenza
Luna
Lyra
Saskia
Sadie

Florence - ok, but wouldn't choose it. Flo/Flossie.
Marnie - no keen
Edith / Edie - not keen
Erin - not keen
Margot - not keen
Nancy - yes
Mabel - not keen
Phoebe - yes
Indie - no
Felicity - too long

Really like Otis, Marley and Jasper for boys. Really like Marnie and Olive for girls.

Generally a great list of names though!

JustAboutPresentable · 14/11/2020 12:25

I really like Otis from your boy’s list.
Not keen on Fraser or Flynn. Too surname-ey.

Love Phoebe and Felicity.
Really dislike Marnie (too cutesy), Indie (faddy, ‘minor celeb’ name), Erin (faux Irish) and Margot (I know it’s become fashionable again, but I find it so hard and cold).

Other suggestions:

Lena
Clara
Sadie
Penelope
Lois
Nina
Etta

I’m useless with boys babes, sorry!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/11/2020 16:36

The only ones I'd consider personally are Jasper, Caspar, Alice, Erin, Florence or Felicity. I really like Marnie or Indie but only as nn's for Marina and India because as given names they are a bit trendy.

Having said that, I secretly love the sound of Flynn, Fraser and Nova even though generally surnames/ more modern names aren't my taste.

The others are either not my style (Margot, Phoebe and Ralph - although there's nothing wrong with them); or either feel a bit too dated for me (Olive, Edith, Nancy, Mabel) or a bit too trendy for my taste (Otis, Chester, Finn, Marley).

TheDetectiveBadge · 14/11/2020 16:37

Otis and Felicity get my vote.
I know a ton of little Finns, Florences and Erins so I'd steer clear of those if you don't want something too popular.

PatsyStone39 · 14/11/2020 16:45

Love Casper. We almost went with this, well Caspian, with nickname Casper.

For girls, I love Nancy and Phoebe best.

Nell96 · 15/11/2020 21:47

Otis - ok
Flynn - too similar to Finn
Finn - love, but very popular
Jasper - very cute for a little boy, not sure it suits a man
Casper - the friendly ghost
Chester - no
Ralph - not keen
Fraser - like a lot
Marley - like, but I think it may be more of a dog's name

Florence - lovely
Marnie - no
Edith / Edie - too 'old lady'
Erin - lovely
Margot - too posh
Nancy - not keen, reminds me of spiders / school girls
Mabel - a bit wishy washy
Phoebe - love, on my list
Indie - like, but a bit trendy
Felicity - too posh / horsey
Alice - love, a classic
Olive - like, but very close to the super popular Olivia
Nova - like, but a bit trendy, also the name of a car

Other names you might like -

Oscar
Marlow
Reuben
Rowan
Rupert
Fred / Freddie / Frederick / Wilfred
Charlie

Ada
Ivy
Iris
Eleanor
Norah
Liv
Frida
Iona
Mabli
Nell
Seren
Fleur

cloverbug · 16/11/2020 12:24

From your boys list I like Flynn.
Finley is similar and also lovely. I don't mind Casper either but prefer Caspian.

From your girls list I love Indie! I also really like Florence, Mabel, Olive and Nova. Some similar name are Indiana, Ivy, Sage, Luna and Vienna.

VenusClapTrap · 16/11/2020 13:08

A lot of these are pretty popular, op, so if you want something a bit different you need to look at the ONS baby name stats.

MercyBodle · 16/11/2020 13:09

Boys - I like: Finn, Jasper, Casper, Ralph, Fraser.
Girls - I like: Florence, Edith/Edie, Phoebe, Felicity, Alice.

Strong dislikes are Marley and Marnie.

chickensoup23 · 16/11/2020 13:41

Thanks everyone - appreciate the feedback and time taken. I'm surprised at how many like Casper / Caspar and only one friendly ghost comment as this had been the biggest thing holding me back but is quickly becoming a favourite!

OP posts:
emmathedilemma · 16/11/2020 13:48

Otis - awful, makes me think of the dog in Garfield
Flynn - like but seems quite popular
Finn - as for Flynn
Jasper - not a fan
Casper - awful (grew up with the ghost)
Chester - awful, best for a dog
Ralph - awful, it's such a a harsh abrupt name
Fraser - like but I wouldn't call it different (but then i'm in Scotland and it's quite popular)
Marley - i only know one and she's a girl!

Florence - love it
Marnie - ok but feels like it should be a nn for something
Edith / Edie - love Edith, less keen on Edie
Erin - awful, seems very dated
Margot - nice
Nancy - ok
Mabel - love it
Phoebe - ok
Indie - prefer India, nn Indie
Felicity - ok
Alice - love it
Olive - ok
Nova - awful, didn't Vauxhall make one? Nora is much better.

I think your girls list is much stronger than your boys names.

notalwaysalondoner · 16/11/2020 14:49

Boy -

Otis - don't really like, strikes me as quite American
Flynn - don't really like, think it will date, but it's OK
Finn - ditto, very dull
Jasper - love it, one of my favourites
Casper - OK
Chester - hate it, will date quickly
Ralph - classic, bit 'weedy'
Fraser - again, American sounding to me
Marley - hate it, dogs name

Girl -

Florence - classic, lovely
Marnie - hate it, sounds like a toddler or a dog, not an adult
Edith / Edie - very popular currently, is OK, I find it too 'old lady'
Erin - fine
Margot - love it, one of my favourites
Nancy - I find it too 'old lady'
Mabel - ditto, my least favourite
Phoebe - fine
Indie - try hard
Felicity - love it!
Alice - plain but fine
Olive - it's OK
Nova - will date, very trendy

Your names seem a very mixed selection between classics (Jasper, Ralph, Florence, Alice) and quite Americanised/trend-driven (Fraser, Chester, Nova, Indie)! I would go for a classic every time. I'm also not a big fan of 'old lady' names but the ones you have on your list are OK except Mabel - have you also considered e.g. Bonnie?

Nell96 · 16/11/2020 19:38

I wouldn't let my 'friendly ghost' comment put you off. My current favourite name for a girl is Sabrina and the first thing a lot of people will think of is 'teenage witch'. But neither are particularly bad associations and people soon forget - names become more strongly associated with people you actually know. Also, will kids today even have heard of the friendly ghost? If you really love the name, go for it.
