Which do you prefer and why? Any other names I might like if I like these? Baby not due for a while but they are our front runners at the moment for a girl. Middle name suggestions also welcome

What about Hazel Rose?

Alice and then Holly.
Hazel sounds frumpy to me.

I know it's fairly popular at the moment but I'd still choose Alice personally of the three - much more traditional (and so unlikely to ever date) than the others. There is nothing wrong with Holly or Hazel but I'd guess most Hollys to be under 40/45 and the majority of Hazels to be 35/40 plus. Alice has such a long history of use, it's a classic, elegant feminine name that suits any age - there's a reason it's been in the top 100 so often.

I'm a Holly and it's been a great name to have at every age. Very grateful my parents picked it.

However Hazel and Alice are both lovely and I don't think you can go too wrong 🙂

Debradoyourecall · 11/11/2020 17:58

I have a little Holly. I wanted a nice simple name, easy to spell and say, that had a link to nature and marked the season she was born in. It has been nice seeing the bright Holly berries this autumn. Sometimes I worry that it might be too plain, but she has some fancier and more unusual middle names if she ever wants to go by those instead.

closetalker · 11/11/2020 18:19

Holly is a lovely name. It fits all ages and isn't used all that often now (if you want a name that isn't shared by loads of people in the same class for example). I know a very gentle Holly and also a very ballsy Holly - both brilliant people and it suits them both well!

AaronCardigan · 11/11/2020 18:21

My nan's sisters were called Alice and Hazel, my name was called Marguerite. Just telling you incase you are channelling my great grandmother 😂

Firebird83 · 11/11/2020 21:14

Alice is the most classic.

Fromthebirdsnest · 11/11/2020 21:31

Alice is beautiful 😍 x

midsomermurderess · 11/11/2020 21:33

Alice. It stands the test of time. An unfailingly lovely and elegant name.

mrwalkensir · 11/11/2020 21:36

not heard of Hazels under 80. Lovely name and well worth going for as coming back in but will always be unusual. Know a lovely Holly. Alice a classic but not common

Chilldonaldchill · 11/11/2020 21:40
  1. Alice - classic, stylish, not super popular
  2. Hazel - there's a lot of love for this at the moment which makes me feel it could be quite faddy. It's nice but I don't love it - not sure why.
  3. Holly - I find this dull. I know a huge number and I can't see the appeal at all. I love Polly though.
DepuisToujours · 11/11/2020 21:53

I like all of them, but like Hazel best. I think it is feminine and nature-y without being OTT flowery.

I like Alice second best. I like the literary connection and think it sounds lovely.

Holly is perfectly nice, but I prefer the others.

BabyMoonPie · 11/11/2020 21:54

I know someone whose daughter is called Hazel and her nickname is hazelnut and I think that's mega cute! I like Alice. DH and I are fans of Terrorvision who have a song called Alice, what's the matter? I quite like the idea of singing it to a baby while trying to work out the reason for crying

FrenchtoEnglish · 11/11/2020 22:01

Hazel is lovely. Hazel Rose, Hazel Faye, Hazel June, Hazel Pearl...

HeySeamus · 11/11/2020 22:11

I would like to say that you have great taste in potential baby names....I have an Alice and a Holly so I am biased really though Wink

RenataLander · 12/11/2020 07:24

When we chose a name for a child, we looked at the meaning of the name, how it fits the family name, we searched among relatives. Mom even wanted to refer to astronomy. I like Holly and Hazel, it sounds cool and cute at the same time.

MercyBodle · 12/11/2020 07:38
  1. Alice
  2. Holly
  3. Hazel

Some middle name ideas ( I would avoid Hazel Rose because Rose is a default girl's middle and because 2 plant/colour names don't go so well together.
Alice Matilda
Alice Jane
Alice Catherine
Alice Phoebe
Holly Matilda
Holly Catherine
Holly Frances
Holly Georgia
Hazel Matilda
Hazel Tess
Hazel Phoebe
Hazel Jemima

Smarshian · 12/11/2020 07:53

I’m a Holly and I really love my name. The other 2 are also lovely though and we almost named our dd Hazel. Great choices

ellenpartridge · 12/11/2020 09:22

I like them all but Alice Holly Hazel in that order

merlotormalbec · 12/11/2020 09:34

Alice
Holly
Hazel

Really don't know why Hazel is so loved On MN

Nubbin · 12/11/2020 10:18

I have a Holly (now 11) - through nursery, primary and now in her school which goes up to 16 - there has never been another Holly in her class or whole school thinking about it. Same for brownies, karate etc. It is a well known but I think not hugely used.

Trousersareoverrated · 12/11/2020 10:27

Well this thread has not helped at all with the choice Grin Nice to know that they are all well liked names though. DSD (11) is very keen on Hazel which has surprised me given that when I had DD she just wanted the more ‘modern’ names that I’m not so keen on.

  1. Hazel - one of my favourite names!
  2. Holly - even though I'd probably never use it, I do really like it!
  3. Alice - I don't hate it but it does feel a little plain and dated.
Starsandglitter · 16/11/2020 18:51

Hazel is 148th in the charts and seems to be on the rise so might be more popular than you think although I think you’d still be pretty safe not meeting many! It’s a beautiful name. Alice and holly are both lovely classics too though!
