Please list as many as you can think of. Plus- let me know if there are any that you'd currently suggest avoiding, any you can't stand, any you absolutely love?

Girls names only.
Tia.

Oh, and Louise!

I also liked Eve, Anne, Eleanor, Rose, Sarah, Helena, Rosamund and Rachel.

Avoided Emily and Amelia as they were very popular at the time. Now I would avoid Emily, Sophia, Eve(Lyn) and Olivia as too popular and Penelope because I just don't like it.

Go back a few generations in your family tree. Then it's personal as well as classic

I wouldn't have said Penelope, Josephine or Margaret were classic names. To me classic names are names that you can't put a date to and there seems to be lots in every era.

Margaret would have been considered an "old lady name" when I was little. Many of my Grandma's friends were Margarets. Josephines were friends of my mums.

None my age or my sister's (10 year gap).

I've never known a Penelope, except for Penelope Cruz or indeed Lady Penelope Grin, until recently - an acquaintance had a baby Penelope about a year ago.

That's really interesting Walkerbean. Alice it must be.

I think Classic names are those from the Bible and those used by royalty

Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Isabella, Alexandra, Anne, Victoria, Eleanor, Charlotte, Caroline, Sophia, Susannah, Catherine, Ruth, Helen

Pipapple · 09/11/2020 07:44

@LittleRa I know a Victoria who goes by Tia Grin

One of my favourite names is Matilda which is very classic in terms of long usage. Sophia, Julia, Anna, Caroline, Madeleine are all lovely too.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 09/11/2020 08:01

My name always comes up in these threads. I am early 40s and was the only one in my class. Popular no, but timeless, yes.

CaffiSaliMali · 09/11/2020 09:21

For me classic names are ones which have been used for a long time. Think of names from the Norman conquest onwards, more common biblical names and names used by the royals.

Matilda
Isabel
Isabella
Emma
Eleanor
Margaret
Anne
Anna
Jane
Alice
Elizabeth
Katharine
Sarah
Rachel
Rebecca

According to upswingbabynames.com

UNDERUSED CLASSICS
These names have been consistently used, but have never been that popular. They never left the top 500, but never hit the top 100 either. An example is Felix.

MODERN CLASSICS
Modern names and revival names that stay popular for 30 years or more morph into modern classics. Ideally these names stay in the top 50 for at least three decades.

Natalie is a former modern name that has graduated to modern classic status.

AUTHENTIC CLASSIC NAMES
In order to be considered an authentic classic, a name must be consistently popular for many decades, at least 50 years, but ideally a century. Ideally it has never left the top 50. James is the perfect example.

@NerrSnerr you're right I hadn't noticed that. Perhaps it's an old article or American.
