Girls' name longlist not long enough

FuschiaGroans · 31/10/2020 18:51

Having lovingly tended my massive list of possible names for months, I showed my partner once we found out we were having a girl and he was "surprised it wasn't longer." Hmm

Here are our possibles, with the ones my partner seems more positive about at the top - they aren't necessarily my favourites.

Nothing is emerging as a clear winner yet, so new suggestions very welcome, or opinions on the ideas we have here.

Thank you!

60 names isn't long enough???? Confused

Happenchance · 31/10/2020 19:34

I dislike Miranda, Emmeline, Livia, Julia, Ruth, Blaise, Marjory, Vesper, Tamar, Peronelle, Honor, Adeline, Briar and Silke.

From your list, my favourites are (in no particular order) Sylvie/Sylvia, Bryony, Jocelyn, Hester (much prefer this to Esther), Marianne, Alexandra, Emma, Zoe, Vivian, Gwen, Laura and Evelyn (though I prefer Evlyn).

FuschiaGroans · 31/10/2020 20:41

Brilliant, thanks!

We can't use Rosalie, Miriam or Serafina because of family/friends (although I like them) but Zinnia, Mirren, Clara, Celeste, Calista and Claudia are going on the list! Asta doesn't work with our surname but I like star names...hmm, maybe Stella should go on too. I'll get to 100 at this rate... Grin

The opinions on the existing list are helpful too, thank you so much.

You should be getting down to a shortlist... Not extending it Confused

FuschiaGroans · 31/10/2020 20:52

I love Florence, Francesca and Suzanna but can't use them - Tansy is sweet but I'd want a formal name I think - Anastasia? Bit of a stretch?

Also have a soft spot for Pearl and Isolde (but not sure we could carry off Isolde...)

As birth approaches, Peronelle makes me think of perineum...

OP posts:
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/10/2020 20:54

Anastasia is fab.

Greyhoundgirly · 01/11/2020 10:20

Wow I'd call that a long long list!! Great names on here xx

BunAndOven · 01/11/2020 18:04

Emmeline my fave

Ladderofyears · 01/11/2020 21:31

Your list contains names that I'm surprised are on the same list iykwim - some very very different styles.

Iris - gorgeous, safe, popular at the moment but I can't imagine it rocketing too high up the lists
Miranda (nn Miri?) - LOVE THIS ONE
Esme/Ysmay - I'm not a fan of Esme, it always seems a bit "wet" to me. I've not come across Ysmay but I think it would be really troublesome to constantly be explaining
Evelyn (nn Linnet?) - boring. Linnet would be a bit better imo
Hazel - ok
Ellen - boring
Raphaelle - I like this a lot but prefer Rafaelle spelling
Emmeline - Love this
Eloise - dislike. Very 90s
Livia - I like this a lot
Julia - don't like. Too 70s for me
Sylvie/Sylvia - I really like Sylvie, not so keen on Sylvia
Ruth - not keen but I'm not really one for biblical names

Hester/Esther - LOVE HESTER, not so keen on Esther
Bryony/Briar - don't like at all
Seren - really like
Orla - don't like at all
Wren - it's cute
Blaise - awful
Lena - really don't like
Saskia - it's ok, I've met some really great ones and some really awful ones so that's probably coloured my judgment
Gwen - not keen
Celia - don't like but love Cecilia or Cecily
Lilian - boring
Isabel - nice but so so so popular
Leonie - ok
Vesper - awful
Tamsin - ok but Tammy is awful
Meredith (nn Miri) - LOVE THIS (though would go for Merry)
Marjory (nn Miri/Mari) - awful
Maria/Marianne/Marion/Mariana - not keen. Marianne would be ok because of Sense and Sensibility but not the others
Alexandra - ok, very humdrum next to some of your other choices
Zelda - awful
Ursula - not keen even though I feel as though it's a name I should like
Sapphira - tacky
Tamar - a real hate name of mine. My ds was at nursery with one and her mother was hideous which probably has coloured my judgment (again)
Vivian - ok
Celine - can't get past Dion
Keziah/Cassia - really really like both these
Cassandra - it's ok but it's hard to get past the original one
Zara/Sara - Zara is cool, Sara is 70s to me
Ember - not keen
Erin - dull
Xanthe - I like this
Jocelyn/Joyce - awful
Clare - dull
Laura - ok
Peronelle - awful
Yolande - not keen
Maeve - not keen
Honor - a lot to live up to. There were three in dd's year at school (she's 18)
Freya - nice
Adeline - not keen
Emma - nice
Anya - really like this
Silke - not keen
Chloe - really not keen
Zoe - really like this.

You have some great names on your list. I would be hard pushed to choose between Miranda, Hester and Meredith with Iris as a (distant) back up.

Ladderofyears · 01/11/2020 21:36

Suggestions:
Thea
Tabitha
Rowena

DramaAlpaca · 01/11/2020 21:42

I don't even know where to start with that list, I'd be here all night Grin

What I will say is that there's a lot of different styles there, as well as a lot of names. The two of you need to look at the list and make a new one of ones you both like. Take lots out rather than add more!

You'll get more constructive help on a shortlist of half a dozen or so.

Roseg990 · 02/11/2020 09:18

I love Xanthe, Sylvie. Really don’t like Hester.

DappledThings · 02/11/2020 11:33

How could it be longer? My longlist was about 10 names, shortlist was 3.

7 of my long list are on yours including what we did finally choose. Other 3 were Cecily, Clara and Delia.

FuschiaGroans · 02/11/2020 19:36

Thanks for your patience everyone - it's been really useful (especially the extras for the list!) and we'll start whittling it down now - several months to go, luckily. It's so interesting to see how polarising some names are...

MikeUniformMike · 03/11/2020 14:57

Iris
Miranda (nn Miri?) - Min/Mindy would be more intuitive
Esme/Ysmay
Evelyn (nn Linnet?). Just call her Linnet, it's an odd nn when Evie is more obvious. Linnet will get said as Lynette by some
Hazel
Ellen
Raphaelle
Emmeline
Eloise
Livia
Julia
Sylvie/Sylvia
Ruth

Hester/Esther
Bryony/Briar
Seren
Orla
Evelyn (nn Linnet) - see above.
Wren
Blaise - boy's name
Lena
Saskia
Gwen
Celia
Lilian
Isabel
Leonie
Vesper
Tamsin
Meredith (nn Miri)
Marjory (nn Miri/Mari) - Marjorie
Maria/Marianne/Marion/Mariana - Marijuana?
Alexandra
Zelda
Ursula
Sapphira - sound like a car
Tamar
Vivian - boy's name
Celine
Keziah/Cassia - Keziah is Kaz-eye-ah
Cassandra
Zara/Sara
Ember
Erin
Xanthe
Jocelyn/Joyce
Clare
Laura
Peronelle - makes me think of Peroni
Yolande
Maeve
Honor
Freya
Adeline
Emma
Anya
Silke - I think it's pronounced Zilk-uh
Chloe
Zoe

How about
Sabina/Sabine (Zab-ee-nuh)
Petronella/Petra
Linnet

Whatthebloodyell · 03/11/2020 15:03

I’m not sure that you need anymore names as that list is plenty long enough! However it is always fun to suggest a few...

Lydia
Celeste
Sadie
Greta
Tess

BiBabbles · 03/11/2020 16:10

Top 10 from yours in no particular order:
Sylvia
Alexandra (also like Alexis and Alexiana)
Lena (also like Leni, both nice nicknames for Ellen, Helena, Lenora or Magdalen)
Celia
Xanthe (also like Xanthia)
Keziah
Cassia
Hazel
Vivian
Jocelyn

Other suggestions based on some of your names:
Leonora or Leola over Leonie
Annora or Leanora over Honor
Adalet over Adeline
Celeste over Celine
Olivine over Sapphira (as gemstone inspired names) or Livia

LadyCatStark · 03/11/2020 16:17

That’s a ridiculously long list: you only need one name!

You seem to like Miri as a nickname so I’d work around that.
