Don’t really have much to say here other than if it would be odd for us to use this name as we do not come from an Irish background. What are people’s general opinions on the name? Thanks

@BinkyBoinky

Bit dated and chavvy.
Yes, the classic lower-middle-class English attitude to Irishness. Not quite our sort, dears. Hmm

That's your issue.
eggandonion · 28/10/2020 11:16

It's not a commonly used baby name in Ireland just now. The youngest John I know is 22 - but I wouldn't say John is chavvy!
Eoin is used more as a form of John - I know a few younger Eoins. Evans seem to have replaced Seans among Irish teenagers.

FizzyGreenWater · 28/10/2020 11:19

Oh grim. Really dated, and just so drab.

I think of Madeleine McCann's father and that the younger boy twin was also called Sean, for some reason! I remember thinking - he certainly got the name short straw.

JuliaJohnston · 28/10/2020 11:22

Chavvy 😂. It's the very antithesis of chavvy.

Madeleine McCann's father is called Gerry.

Nice

I'm not english. It's just an impression of a name. That's what baby name threads are all about, jeez.

RedElephants · 28/10/2020 13:20

Dated.....Shock good grief Hmm
My 19 year old is a Sean..

We hadn't actually decided on a name for him, when he arrived almost 5 weeks early..
My husband arrived at the hospital, visiting time, one evening with our eldest and said what about Sean, he and eldest child had been watching Shaun the Sheep on the Tv the night before. So Sean it was

RedElephants · 28/10/2020 13:23

Dated!!
Chavvy!!
Grim!!

Blimey you lot are charmers aren't you..not

serialreturner · 28/10/2020 13:27

My lovely BIL is an S, called for his DDad John.

blindinglyobviouslight · 28/10/2020 13:28

It's true though, it's a very lower middle class attitude to Irish.

You can say what you like as you point out, but we can respond as we like as well.

User27aw · 28/10/2020 13:34

My cousin in his 40s is Sean, pronounced Shon. English but with Irish parents.
I'd always wondered about the pronunciation, every other Sean I've met was pronounced Shaun.

LynetteScavo · 28/10/2020 19:50

@Fruitpunch - I have to disagree with you that Edward is a dated classic. It's a classic. Wink

JuliaJohnston · 28/10/2020 19:53

A dated classic is an oxymoron.

dewdropps · 29/10/2020 01:43

Sean is nothing like John. They're 2 different names to me. I don't like either right now, but I hated Henry a few months ago and now it's the cutest name ever 😂 all names go through phases I think

dewdropps · 29/10/2020 01:43

@JuliaJohnston oxymoron I've learnt something tonight 🥰

CabbageStoppedMyScan · 29/10/2020 13:46

It's naff to me. I think it's because you have people spelling it Shaun, Shawn etc. It also sounds grim in some accents!

LittleTiger007 · 29/10/2020 16:09

It depends upon where you live I guess. I’ve never taught one in over 20 years of teaching. Maybe it’s due a revival?

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/10/2020 18:20

Tiger I am in the NW and we always have a Sean or two in school (been teaching over 20 years). DS has a Sean in his year.

joystir59 · 29/10/2020 18:22

Lovely name especially spelt Sean
