Girls names - possibly Hazel?

DPs choice is Arabella. I know a few, so the fact it’s quite common puts me off. It’s a bit too long and “princessy” for me. Also, I feel it would be shortened to Bella and there’s a lot of those too.

My choice is Phoebe. We don’t personally know any and I think it’s cute. It’s a little more common than I’d like in general but it goes with DPs very common surname. DP isn’t keen at all, he’s also not keen on Rosa which is another one of my choices that I’m scribbling off my list.

The only name we’ve both said we like is Hazel. I don’t know any and I love old names (our eldest son has an old name that made a comeback). I like that it’s not too long and can’t really be shortened to anything. The only thing I don’t like about it is how it looks written down which isn’t a major issue, and it’s possibly because I’ve stared at it for so long now as it’s the only name we can both agree on. I like that it’s an older name so that doesn’t put me off. It’s a nice balance of being unique (for where we live anyway) and not so uncommon you question it (in my opinion). Interested to see what others think!

We’re not telling our families the name, mainly because my side of the family are very opinionated and would put anyone off their chosen name and DPs family start calling the baby by the chosen name before they’re here and I don’t like that (can’t explain why, I just don’t).

Hazel is lovely!

I also love Phoebe

Not keen on Arabella or Rosa though

LopeyLopez · 25/10/2020 22:59

Hazel is my name. I love it and always have.

I am 40 and have gone through my whole life never knowing any others closely. As a teacher I've never taught any either.

I like it that way. Great choice! 👍

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 25/10/2020 23:04

Hazel is the nicest of all of your names imho.

IdblowJonSnow · 25/10/2020 23:14

I love Hazel. I know of a little hazel and it really suits her.
I also like Rosa.
Just a thought but given that it's you pushing your baby out, don't you think you should get the casting vote?! Smile

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/10/2020 23:48

Hazel is pleasant enough, I just don't love it. I've only ever met 1 in RL (she'd be about 40 now). Her name never caused any teasing/comments or seemed odd or dated then and I don't think it would now - Hazel is a name that suits all ages and it's nice and simple to say and spell.

I must admit I prefer Rosa followed by Arabella personally (although I agree Arabella can feel a bit frilly sometimes). I'm usually less keen on "e/y" ending names (they often feel slightly sweet/cute to me) so I'm not fond of Phoebe, sorry.

If you are interested in other suggestions - Iris feels similar in style to Hazel to me, Nina similar to Rosa, Isobel similar but less frilly than Arabella, Selene similar to Phoebe (but I prefer it).

NoSquirrels · 25/10/2020 23:54

Absolutely love it. Much better than either Arabells or Phoebe.

I like the PP’s suggestions of Iris and Nina too. Rosalie is good (Roz-alie rather than Rose-alie).

But Hazel is just lovely. Do that!

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2020 23:57

I love Hazel.

I also like Heather, I met a toddler Heather recently and I thought it was lovely.

jennie0412 · 26/10/2020 00:40

Hazel, Amber, Ara and Mabel are my all time favourite girls names Smile

Hazel is lovely, I grew up with one and always loved her name. My partners aunt has the name too, I feel like it's a name for life if you know what i mean? It suits a little girl and an older lady. It's well known but not too popular imo.

Whatthedoodle · 26/10/2020 07:27

Thank you everyone it seems like it’s a well liked name. I like the other suggestions but just not as much as Hazel so it looks like we’ll be sticking with that (at least for now anyway!)

@IdblowJonSnow DP has said ultimately it’s my decision but I’m easily put off names if he doesn’t like them.

I never really knew anyone with my name growing up as it was always a much older name. The only people close ish to my age were either Spanish or Italian (I’m not either of those). I liked having a name that nobody my age had. It made things less confusing at school and I love meeting other people with my name. Hopefully ‘Hazel’ has the same affect!

I like Hazel. It’s on my final list of 3.

Enko · 26/10/2020 12:27

Hazel is lovely

pprmint · 26/10/2020 15:56

Hazel is such a lovely name. I have an Arabella so of course I'm biased. I really dislike Phoebe, It's one of the very few names that I honestly can't stand.

FizzyGreenWater · 26/10/2020 16:40

Sorry but I really can't stand it - it's just so lumpen and 80s. It's 'unusual 80s' - I have it in with Maxine, Beverley etc.

Mabel? Maeve? Astrid? Anna? Anouk?

Argh anything but Hazel.

DragonPie · 26/10/2020 21:11

Sorry I really don’t like it either, it’s really harsh sounding and as a pp said very 80s.

7catsaremycoven · 27/10/2020 08:58

Hi @Whatthedoodle . My middle name is Hazel, I'm in my early 50s. I'm not overfond of it myself but other people like it on the odd occasion they hear it! I've just watched a programme with a Hispanic lady called Heyzel in it and wondered if the unusual spelling might appeal to you both? I've no idea if that's the usual Hispanic spelling but I've never seen it before. Good luck with your baby 🍼💐

VenusClapTrap · 27/10/2020 09:08

I love it. I wanted it for dd but Dh vetoed it. Sad

MikeUniformMike · 27/10/2020 18:44

Hazel is nice.

Ladderofyears · 27/10/2020 23:08

I like Hazel. It reminds me of rabbits - I presume because of Watership Down - bit not in a bad way.
I dislike both Phoebe and Arabella - Phoebe just makes me think of feeble and Arabella is far too frilly.
