Which spelling do you think is nicer? We're absolutely settled on the name, but which spelling looks better? Thanks.

Keira. I dont get why people wouldnt know how to pronounce it. Everyone knows how to pronounce Keir, and Keira is the same with an A on the end to feminise it.

I've never come across the name Kira. I would assume it's pronounced Keye-ra, not the same as Keira.

Jericoo · 24/10/2020 03:07

Ciara

MercyBodle · 24/10/2020 04:05

Keira or Ciara. Lovely name either way.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 24/10/2020 09:03

@Oneandabean

Kiera *@WiseUpJanetWeiss* Ciara is a different name, pronounced differently
I know several Ciaras and they all pronounce their name as Keira Knightly does.
Firebird83 · 24/10/2020 09:13

Kira or Kiera

OHappyDay · 24/10/2020 09:27

Keira

Frazzled2207 · 24/10/2020 09:29

Keira
I like the name but the various spelling options would put me off. She’ll always have to spell it out. As someone with a similar predicament, this massively puts me off

NotGenerationAlpha · 24/10/2020 09:36

The reason why Ciara can be different is because of how the American singer says her name. It’s see-AH-ra. I have only heard it’s the same as Keira here in the U.K.

timeforanewstart · 24/10/2020 09:39

Kiera as i might thing kira was pronounced differently
Ciera i would also pronounce kiera

timeforanewstart · 24/10/2020 09:41

Plus if i had to spell the name i would say do you spell with a c or a k and then spell iera would never think of kira
Like carole / tracy i would ask do you spelll with an e or without as aware two ways

OchonAgusOchonO · 24/10/2020 09:41

@EmmaGrundyForPM - Keira. I dont get why people wouldnt know how to pronounce it. Everyone knows how to pronounce Keir, and Keira is the same with an A on the end to feminise it.

I don't know how to pronounce Keir.

Merename · 24/10/2020 09:44

I’d choose Ciara too, the Ks to me feel like a changing of a lovely name.

SionnachRua · 24/10/2020 09:44

Yeah I only know of the name Keir because of MN and Starmer. It's not that widespread.

Anyway OP I think Keira. Ciara is nicest imo.

Ladderofyears · 24/10/2020 10:14

Out of those two I'd pick Keira because everyone knows it due to Knightly.
However I do prefer Ciara as a spelling.
I think Kira could be confused with the k-EYE-ra pronunciation.

julie81 · 24/10/2020 10:15

Definitely Ciara.

Sausagedog1 · 24/10/2020 10:26

Keira is gorgeous and everyone will know how to pronounce it. Kira is fine but you might get a few K-eye-ra pronunciations.
I like Ciara if Irish but if not I'd stick to the Keira spelling.
Also don't let people put you off about choosing a name with multiple spellings, loads of names have at least two spellings!! It's really not that big a deal.

CaffiSaliMali · 24/10/2020 11:34

Between Kira and Keira I would go with Keira - I think the pronunciation is more obvious. The actress has that spelling, which helps.

Kira looks a bit like the male name Kiri which has a different Ki sound to Keira so people might think Kira is like Kiri with an a.

Overall I prefer the traditional Irish spelling of Ciara, however.

june2007 · 24/10/2020 11:39

Kiera or the Irish way. I woudn,t know if Kira was penouneced the same as Kiera or ky-ra.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/10/2020 13:08

Definitely NOT Kiera. It needs to be Keira
june2007 · 24/10/2020 19:38

I meant Keira.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/10/2020 20:03

I'd probably use the Kiera spelling myself - this was the original anglicized version of the Irish Ciara and the most popular spelling (similar to the male Kieran) when the name first came into fashion here about 40-50 years ago.

Keira was apparenty a misspelling by one of Knightley's parents on her birth certificate (but I suppose she is the most famous "Keira" and so this spelling is more the norm now).

Kira is much more international, used more commonly in the US, Japan, Russia, India etc (although all these Kira versions have different etymologicals root to Kiera).

mum2jakie · 24/10/2020 20:06

Ciara. Although the Ciara I know does constantly have people mispronouncing it...

DariaMorgendorffer · 24/10/2020 20:14

Kira.

JollyGiraffe12 · 24/10/2020 20:15

Keira

Linnet · 24/10/2020 20:18

Kira
