What do you think of Evander?

We've got an Alec and a female Alex in the family so Alexander is out, which is a shame as it's about the only name I like. I just don't think there's room for another Alex. I've been looking at alternatives and came across this one. What do you think?

I’ve never heard of it but it sounds quite nice! Although reminds me a bit of Olivander

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 03/10/2020 18:38

I went to school with one 40y ago in rural Scotland.
It's a perfectly fine name, but perhaps a little unusual these days

SBTLove · 03/10/2020 18:38

Like the boxer??

SisterAgatha · 03/10/2020 18:39

Nice!

aureliacecilia · 03/10/2020 18:40

I don't know the boxer @SBTLove. Bad association? Good association? I'm not into boxing!

I really like the name Evander. It sits in really nice spot of unusual names, where it sounds familiar without being overly popular or odd.

Ohhgreat · 03/10/2020 18:44

Do you like the nickname Evan? As that will be a common abbreviation of it.

ComicePear · 03/10/2020 18:46

I also think of the boxer, and it's not a great association. He's the one who got his ear bitten off by Mike Tyson!

ComicePear · 03/10/2020 18:47

How about Alistair for a similar name to Alexander?

aureliacecilia · 03/10/2020 18:48

@ComicePear Ouch! I've heard of that but didn't know who was involved.

@Ohhgreat No issues with Evan - pretty neutral on it.

penaltytaker · 03/10/2020 18:51

I'd think he was named after the boxer

Golfinches · 03/10/2020 18:52

Are you a big fan of the Aeneid then?

Okokokitsout · 03/10/2020 19:04

It just sounds made up sorry

emmathedilemma · 03/10/2020 19:06

I wouldn't have even thought of the boxer until people mentioned it. Is it not a different sound to Evan? I'd say it as Ee-van-deer and Evan as a harder E. I agree with the suggestion of Alistair being nicer!

Gulpingcoffee · 03/10/2020 19:06

Xander is another (Scottish I think) version of Alexander. The Middle Eastern version is Iksander but you might have to be married to a Turk to get away with that one!

NiceGerbil · 03/10/2020 19:07

I thought of holyfield as well!

I quite like it op.

ivfbeenbusy · 03/10/2020 19:09

Sorry awful

No would would ever use his full name - most likely get shortened to Evan

Sunbird24 · 03/10/2020 19:13

I rather like it. Could end up with an Andy nickname if you wanted it to

SBTLove · 03/10/2020 19:13

@Gulpingcoffee
It’s a nickname for Alexander here in Scotland, as is Alex, Sandy etc

toastofthetown · 03/10/2020 19:15

Van could also work as a nickname for Evander. More intuitive than Evan I think.

lojoko · 03/10/2020 19:19

I like it.

Hazelgood · 03/10/2020 19:28

I love it so much! It strikes a good balance of feeling traditional without being commonly used. For the same reason, I also like Leander, Everett and Lemuel.

biteysaurus · 03/10/2020 19:56

Absolutely love it, it's also on my shortlist

Tillygetsit · 03/10/2020 22:51

Good name.

Thankssomuch · 03/10/2020 22:52

I love boxing.
