Stiliyan for a boy?

Hi all. What do you think of the name Stiliyan for a boy? Does it sound/look too weird? His surname would also be foreign.

(If any football fans out there - yes, his father IS a huge fan of Stiliyan Petrov from Aston Villa, and yes, we are both Bulgarian living in the UK Smile )

I'd love to know if "playground taunts" still happen in a cultural melting pot like the UK.

Not since the friggin 80s surely. Pretty sure if kids are going to mock, they'll do it regardless if you're name is James or Ptolemy.... 🤔

jessstan2 · 25/09/2020 16:53

I'm not a Scot so haven't heard the name before but there must be simpler names you coulld use rather than 'Silly Ann', 'Silly' for short.

jessstan2 · 25/09/2020 16:53

'could' not 'coulld'.

The name isn't Silly Ann though, just because you're being obtuse over the pronunciation doesn't mean op should pick a simple name to help those with limited reading skills
Sausagedog1 · 25/09/2020 19:06

I think it's great, a strong name. I've got a Cillian which is similar in sound. I had a few comments about why I've made his life harder but I'm still definitely glad we chose a name with a link to his cultural heritage Smile

hopsalong · 25/09/2020 19:25

Sorry, that is one of the worst names I have EVER heard.

lakesidewinter · 25/09/2020 19:53

I think it is a perfectly fine name OP, I might not pronounce it perfectly on the first go but I could easily learn.

Just as well the OP isn't thinking of calling her child Silly Ann then. Hmm

Let me guess, you think all boys should be called Toby or Oliver?
BinkyBoinky · 25/09/2020 21:04

If you're both Bulgarian and it's a Bulgarian name, then why not? So what if it's 'foreign' to the Brits, they'll just have to get used to it.

chipsandpeas · 25/09/2020 21:06

@Pet8

Congratulations on your baby boy. I'm a Celtic fan so think the name is a great choice. Stan is lovely for a nn.

JessAviva · 25/09/2020 21:40

It’s lovely. If you love it and it suits him then that should be his name.

ScribblingMilly · 25/09/2020 22:07

Yan the Man.

Tillygetsit · 25/09/2020 22:46

It's great. Don't take any notice of the daft comments that say you should hive him a British name. That's nonsense.

Tillygetsit · 25/09/2020 22:47

Give not hive.

MadameBlobby · 25/09/2020 22:48

If you are Bulgarian it’s fine and he could do worse than share a name with someone like Stiliyan Petrov Smile

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 25/09/2020 22:49

Don’t be ridiculous. No child is going to come out with stillborn! Silly-something maybe but kids make nicknames out of anything.

I think it’s fine, not to hard to pronounce.

RunningFromInsanity · 25/09/2020 22:50

@jessstan2

He'd soon become, "Silly Jan", or "Stillborn", at school.

Definitely not.

Literally no one would call him that...
itsjakeandamy · 26/09/2020 23:33

I imagine playground taunts only occur in backwoods areas where children's parents comment negatively about others children's names.
I can't imagine in the London melting pot my children are fortunate enough to be educated in, anyone commenting on anyone else's names.
I think it's a fine name and Yan is a great nickname should he want one. (Though the concept of having to offer an "easier" name to pronounce made me want to cry. Are we back in the 50s?)
Op, I hope you feel happy with your name choice. Please feel reassured that most of us who have to look at CVs don't discriminate based on names Confused or anything else...
