Thinking of using Sonny (in our top three names), what do you think of it? Middle name Joseph.

OP posts:

@mammysharkdoo

It's a lovely name. God there is some trolls on here. I think you have to be pretty cool to be called Sonny 🙂
Your name does not bestow any character/personality traits on you 🙄 What a ridiculous post 😂😂😂
SimonJT · 17/09/2020 18:48

Sonny is a popular Hindu and Sikh name, there is nothing patronising, horrendous or nicknamey about a traditional religious name.

bananachocolate · 17/09/2020 18:49

I know an 18 year old Sonny and it's very nice on him, doesn't sound juvenile at all

What a stupid post.

The OP asked "What do you think of it?" That is the whole point of the Baby Names board: to garner opinions.

Also, you don't know what a troll is.

bunnyonthemantle · 17/09/2020 18:52

I like it

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 17/09/2020 19:06

@theyeasayer

I agree with you, re: trolls, they live under bridges and say "I'm a troll, fol-dee-rol" all the time.

They have never been accused of sneering at peoples names - I think you will find that even the goats agree with that. Grin

Don’t be put off by what people write here. You will get extreme viewpoints. I’m a teacher and we have a Sonny at school. Whilst unusual, the fact is that it’s the person you love first then the name gains favour when you know good people with a certain name. People in your circle will love your son and therefore love his name. It’s also better to have a unique name than be one of thousands of Oliver’s or Josh’s in a class.

Obviouspretzel · 18/09/2020 10:17

Sonny Corleone was taken seriously. However, his real name was Santino.

I like it, but only really as a nickname I think.

nzeire · 18/09/2020 10:23

I love it

ComeOnHolidayByMistake · 18/09/2020 10:39

Love it!

notthemum · 18/09/2020 10:44

I actually quite like it, but would prefer Joseph Sonny than Sonny Joseph.

zigaziga · 18/09/2020 10:51

I know of one Sonny and really find it hard to get past the name, I really hate it.

Friends have had children with names I originally dislike that just become normal over the months and years and I just manage to forget how I disliked the name to start with but Sonny (and Teddy!) is the exception.

Bearcub01 · 18/09/2020 10:55

The comments on here are awful! Would love to know what these people have named their children.

I love Sonny and actually know an older man called Sonny so think it’s fine for adults too.

ImaSababa · 18/09/2020 10:56

Awful. You wouldn't call a girl Daughtery.

perfumeistooexpensive · 18/09/2020 11:34

I know a Sonny. The name was fine as a child but as an adult it's embarrassing for him. Sonny Jim is a well known saying. Call him James and Sonny as a nickname. You have to think of the baby no longer being little and cute and think of a 50 year old man working in a professional environment.

len1234 · 18/09/2020 11:41

I love Sonny! I'm surprised people here think it's a strange name considering I know quite a few. Sonny Joseph sounds great. 😊

LouisBalfour · 18/09/2020 11:45

It’s a silly affectation and would be a burden for anyone in adult life.

Thisismytimetoshine · 18/09/2020 11:47

Well, not Sonny, clearly Confused
The comments aren't awful, but the name really is.

ginghamtablecloths · 18/09/2020 11:49

I dislike it and it will hardly be appropriate when he gets to fifty-odd years old.

Thisismytimetoshine · 18/09/2020 11:50

how I disliked the name to start with but Sonny (and Teddy!) is the exception.
God, yes! Teddy is almost worse. But it's neck and neck, really, they're both ludicrous.

Napqueen1234 · 18/09/2020 11:50

Hate it

SimonJT · 18/09/2020 12:19

Having an common Sikh/Hindu name is a huge burden Hmm
tornadoalley · 18/09/2020 12:48

It doesn't meet my 'having an important job interview as an adult' test.

Oldbutkicking · 18/09/2020 14:49

“The comments on here are awful! Would love to know what these people have named their children.”
A classic boy’s name that has been popular throughout the generations and has a well known short version. He’s very happy with it and it fits well with his professional life.

nachthexe · 18/09/2020 14:57

I know one who is about 12/13 now. Tbh his bro gets all the hassle as he’s called Jude and everyone just sings at him. Grin
