Struggling to choose from the below list, due soon and just can't decide!
Any help please!!

Matilda
Penelope
Verity
Henrietta
Francesca

Also like Jemima and Felicity but husband vetoed them!

Surname is unusual, 4 letters and starts with a Y!

Vote for Verity or Matilda - love them

Henrietta and Francesca I don't like

Really like Felicity and Jemima too. Shame about those

Spied · 10/09/2020 10:28

Matilda is my favourite from your list. I also love Tilly as a nn.
Penelope looks and sounds clumpy to me. I don't like it, although Penny is ok.
Verity, I think, is quite a hard name to pull off imo. I don't think it's a very attractive name somehow.
Henrietta I don't like. It also reminds me of Horrid Henry being called Henrietta. I also wouldn't fancy DD called Henri.
I really, really dislike Francesca. Hate Fran.

Champy87 · 10/09/2020 11:59

I think you have a strong list of girls names and all have their pro's and cons.

Matilda - pretty but popular, prefer Matty to Tilly which I find a bit twee
Penelope - another pretty but popular (might not be an issue but it jumped in popularity in the last year) good choice of nns though with Penny, Nell, Nelly
Verity - probably the least common and I think its a great name for little girls and adults. Lack of nn's although this might not be a problem. I know two grown up Verity's who both go by their full name.
Henrietta - my least favourite not that it matters Etta is a pretty and elegant nn.
Francesca - a classic but not over used name. I feel like the Matilda, Penelope and Henrietta are having a bit of a moment whereas Francesca is more understated. I think Frankie is a cool nn too.

TheChristmasPrincess · 10/09/2020 12:32

Matilda - pretty and sweet but becoming quite popular. Lots of cute nickname options (Millie, Tillie, Matty, Tilda)

Penelope - very elegant, suits all ages. Again, becoming popular but not so much as Matilda. Love Penny as a nickname. Only downside is I remember loads of people at school didn’t know how to pronounce it when reading it aloud and they saying “Pen-e-lop” 😆

Verity - not my style but it’s an okay name. Looks and sounds a bit severe, might be hard to wear. Good if you are a fan of strong names.

Henrietta - not a fan as I can never get over it being a femininsed version of Henry. It’s just sounds too masculine for my liking. Classic and underused (maybe for a reason).

Francesca - i really like the name but feel it’s a bit dated these days (heard it a lot of 90s & 00s babies). Very feminine but not a fan of any of the nicknames that come from it (hate Fran, Franny and Cesca!)

ellenpartridge · 10/09/2020 12:49

I would probably pick Francesca as a favourite then Verity then Matilda

Subbu12 · 10/09/2020 15:09

Henrietta and Francesca are good to pronouce. I'm not your region but these names gives good to me

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/09/2020 16:17

Henrietta and Francesca are gorgeous

I used to love Matilda but it is so popular in my local area I now find it a bit boring

LilacSloth · 10/09/2020 16:23

Verity is lovely.

len1234 · 10/09/2020 16:29

I love Penelope!

Firebird83 · 10/09/2020 16:45

Henrietta or Matilda

danascully96 · 10/09/2020 16:51

Matilda is lovely :) I would suggest also Susannah and Josephine!

DramaAlpaca · 10/09/2020 16:54

I like all of them a lot, with the exception of Francesca.

MillieFTM · 10/09/2020 19:05

Thanks for all the feedback! So interesting to see others opinions...it's such a big decision!

Matilda - overused
Penelope - ok
Verity - ferrety
Henrietta - depends on surname, prefer Harriet
Francesca - pretty but I'm not keen
Jemima - favourite
Felicity - too long

Try the name with the surname, and try potential nn with the surname.

All the names on your list are long so will probably get shortened.

I'll guess a surname of Yale as it's the first one that came to mind

Penelope Yale is good, Penny Yale sounds like a cheap pint, Nell Yale is a bit tongue-twistery
etc

MikeUniformMike · 10/09/2020 20:45

(I've sort of assumed that she's going to be called Penelope)

SE13Mummy · 10/09/2020 21:09

I think it depends on what sort of Y last name you have. I like Verity the most from your list and would say something like Verity York would work well but Verity Yeti, definitely not!

RoRoIvy · 10/09/2020 21:15

Matilda is wonderful :-)

Mrsmophead · 10/09/2020 21:19

At a push Jemima. The rest are just all a bit Enid Blyton.

MercyBodle · 11/09/2020 05:59

My favourite is Francesca. I love that it feels strong and traditional without being over-used. Frankie and Cesca are both great as short forms.
I also love Matilda and Penelope (and love the short forms), and while I don't think it's necessarily a problem choosing a popular name, when there is a less popular one available, why not? I personally would narrow down the list to these 3.
Verity is fine, just don't like it as much as the others.
Dislike Henrietta. (Love Harriet though).

MillieFTM · 11/09/2020 09:37
