I think Ronan is a lot nicer

Notapheasantplucker · 07/09/2020 20:05

I love it, I was very close to calling my own DS Roman. I would've also used the NN Romy, because why not? Its a good unisex name.

Sunshineandsparkle · 07/09/2020 20:07

I like it... but... it has become extremely popular in our area in the last year. It seems to be the new “in” name. I’ve never met one in my life but this year, I know 4 babies called Roman.

Branleuse · 07/09/2020 20:09

I like it

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/09/2020 20:12

I really like it. I know a Roman in his late 20s. He is fab so maybe that sways me, but I do think it's a good name.

TantricTwist · 07/09/2020 20:15

Romy is defo a girls name.

FluffyEggsontoast · 07/09/2020 20:35

My thoughts are that there's a LOT of babies called Roman. I've never met a Roman before in my life until the last couple of years but now it feels like every other newborn has this name or one of the similar ones.

Romy works fine as a nickname I think @Viletta if you like it.

Yorkshiredolls · 07/09/2020 20:43

I love it, I've got a Roman, he gets affectionately called Romy. So far Ive never met another Roman. we get a mixed response when people ask his name though, not negative, just surprised. I like that its very masculine and works well for both a child and an adult.

Lavenderblues · 07/09/2020 21:01

Romy is a very well known girls name!

DramaAlpaca · 07/09/2020 21:28

I'm not keen. I much prefer the Irish name Ronan.

Gotthetshirt23 · 07/09/2020 21:31

The only Roman I know is a dog - Male though !
Definitely think Romy is a more female name .

FluffyEggsontoast · 08/09/2020 07:00

If you like Romy, how about the name Rudy or Rudi @Viletta

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 08/09/2020 07:44

OK, provided he wasn't built in a day.

ImaSababa · 08/09/2020 08:44

It's very OK! Magazine.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 08/09/2020 09:49

It is having a moment and will date, I fear. Romy is 100% a girls’ name.

unmarkedbythat · 08/09/2020 09:53

Absolutely love. Would have used for one of ours if we didn't have a surname that would have made people think of Polanski.

Grufallosfriends · 08/09/2020 10:31

Romy, Romilly are girls names.

Roman is ok but I much prefer Rowan which is more timeless and classic.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 08/09/2020 10:57

Polanski.

But I don't like it much regardless. It just feels a bit silly, like you wanted him to be all strong and mighty and went "well the Roman empire was pretty cool, let's name him after that".

Plus as a few people have pointed out, the name is rising in popularity. The only thing less ok than being called Roman is being one of two kids in the class called Roman.

Bananarana · 08/09/2020 11:05

I'm not a fan. Sounds like a Roman soldier.

FeedMeSantiago · 08/09/2020 11:05

I know a very handsome adult Roman so positive connotations for me. I don't think of Roman Polanksi.

It is becoming very popular but I think it's a nice strong name.

unmarkedbythat · 08/09/2020 11:08

Roman is ok but I much prefer Rowan which is more timeless and classic.

Hmm

How'd you work that out? Roman has been in use as a given name in a range of cultures for centuries. Look up the origins of its use in Russia and Eastern Europe.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 08/09/2020 11:10

It seems a strong name to me. I hadn't realised that it's become more popular of late.
Rather than the film director, I think of
Roman Abramovich who owns Chelsea FC.

Natalie654321 · 08/09/2020 11:11

I really like this name. I also really like Luca too.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 08/09/2020 11:13

Rowan is currently doing the shift from boy's name to unisex name, which means it will probably become seen as a girls only name before too long. You could end up with the equivalent of the last generation of boys named Carol or Evelyn or Hillary.

Viletta · 08/09/2020 11:27

@FluffyEggsontoast Rudy sounds like "rude" to me. I also like Ronnie, but don't like Ronald.
