Trying to decide between Carys Hope and Iris Hope for DD1. DS1 is Nathan Luke. Any thoughts?

If it's the sound you're after, how about Charis? Derived from the ancient Greek, meaning charity, love for others.

Thymeout · 30/08/2020 22:22

pronounced Kariss not Ch like charity.

Tillygetsit · 30/08/2020 22:38

I love both. Carys pips it for me. Beautiful name.

namenerd · 31/08/2020 01:09

I think Iris is stunning 😍

EuphieKat · 31/08/2020 01:58

I know a few young girls named Carys; it’s in fairly regular use in my area of Wales, so I don’t consider it ‘old fashioned’. I don’t see why you can’t use it outside of Wales!

Namaste6 · 31/08/2020 02:05

Hands down Iris for me. Beautiful name.

daisypond · 31/08/2020 02:05

I like both. But both are perhaps a little behind the times, Carys more so. I would expect an Iris to be about a teenager now. Lovely name, though.

missmouse101 · 31/08/2020 02:48

Definitely Carys. Iris is overused and a part of the eye which is very off putting.

Onestepup · 31/08/2020 08:56

Carta

Onestepup · 31/08/2020 08:57

Sorry, autocorrect fail! Hmm I meant Carys.

BeMorePacific · 31/08/2020 10:34

I love both. But would sway towards Iris. 😍

duckoutofwater · 31/08/2020 14:07

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful. Seems like quite an even split so far. Does anyone have experience of how either name is perceived in Scotland? For those who say Iris is overused, is this in parts of England? Has anyone outside of Wales had any pronunciation issues with Carys?

Iris is beautiful and my favourite
Never met one, I'm in England

Flymetothestars · 31/08/2020 14:17

@duckoutofwater

Iris' growth in terms of numbers seems to have massively slowed over the past couple of years. No wonder I've not met one.

If you look on bounty.com you normally search names by county to see how many there are nearby.

There was a Cary's at my primary school (not in Wales). She got called Carrots a lot. Hopefully kids are nicer now 😁
I prefer Iris.

KateF · 31/08/2020 15:42

They're both lovely names and neither is very popular where I am ( I know one of each, both teenagers). I would choose Carys as I would have liked to have acknowledged my dad's Welsh heritage. I also think Hope is lovely.

finallychangedmyusername · 31/08/2020 16:52

Both are great names but I prefer Carys.

CharlieBoo · 31/08/2020 21:59

Iris is gorgeous x

momtoboys · 31/08/2020 22:04

They are both lovely but I think I like Carys best.

MondeoFan · 31/08/2020 22:22

Carys

FreshHorizons · 01/09/2020 07:50

Iris

TazMac · 01/09/2020 08:03

Both are beautiful names.

Carouselfish · 01/09/2020 13:34

I love both, though prefer the spelling Charis.

CaffiSaliMali · 01/09/2020 14:26

They're both nice but I prefer Carys.
