Rory or Callum?

For DC3 - this is what we have whittled it down to bit I have small reservations about both. Please be brutal, it's what I need!

Rory - actually prefer the Gaelic pronunciation and spelling but we live in a non-English speaking country and half of the family would struggle with pronunciation too, so it doesn't seem fair on the kid to lumber them with a name that nobody can say or spell. Also very popular in Scotland atm and I'm a bit worried it's becoming more of a posh/trendy English name (nothing against either bit I am neither!)

Callum - I like because more traditional Scottish and more timeless perhaps? But on a bad day it makes me think of Gollum in terms of how it sounds and I've never know a Callum with much oomph to them so in my mind it is quite an inoffensive but maybe not so charismatic name.

Despite these reservations they do both rock the boxes of:

I wouldn't feel weird saying "that's my son ..."

Fit with other kids' names

I can shout them easily 😉

Also welcome to other suggestions of a similar vein! I liked Gregor too but DH not so much.

Rory!

PlantPotting · 19/08/2020 15:35

Much prefer Callum

Batfinklestein · 19/08/2020 16:17

I like Rory! Have you thought about Ciaran or Cameron if you're not sure about Callum?

Oneandabean · 19/08/2020 18:21

Rory was very popular when I had DD 9 years ago but it seems to have decreased in popularity a lot. I don’t know of any under 7.
Callum is a bit boring to me

foxtiger · 19/08/2020 21:45

Love Rory.

Don't really like Callum with 2 Ls, but quite like Calum, which is the more traditional Scottish spelling. When I see Callum written down it always makes me think of "callous"!

Todaywewilldobetter · 19/08/2020 21:48

I've a Rory and he is, so far, the only one we know!

nutellatoast · 20/08/2020 04:52

Love Rory.
Not so keen on Callum
Cameron, Lachlan and Cillian are also nice.

Love Rory ❤️

tazzyb · 20/08/2020 07:23

Don't like Callum much. Really hate the name Rory.

lowlandLucky · 20/08/2020 16:27

Like them both also like Logan, Fraser and Grant

SingingSands · 20/08/2020 16:33

Rory.

Disclaimer: I love both names, but decision swayed by DS bringing a friend called Rory home today, a boy I've never met before, and he was such a lovely young man!

Etinox · 20/08/2020 16:36

Love Rory
Euan Alasdair and Aidan are similar...

MikeUniformMike · 20/08/2020 16:43

Rory. Roary. Wowy or Vovy.

Calum - prefer the single l. Bad boy name.

I like both but wouldn't choose either.

badg3r · 20/08/2020 17:58

@Etinox i love those too! But unfortunately too similar to other DC and close family. Man, I feel I am really scraping the barrel to find a name I like as much as our other kids' names... 😂 hopefully it's a girl since I'm super happy with our choice there (we can call a boy Minnie right? Right???) (actual girl's name is not Minnie)

Callum was very popular in England around the turn of the century so it feels quite dated to my English ear; I think it's more classic in Scotland. I love Rory.
