Minnow?

I really like the sound of Minnow for a little girl. It seems really lovely and sweet on the tongue. I am aware it is a fish, but it doesn't seem that different to being named Willow (which is a tree), or even after a flower or another animal. I'm also aware I am technically naming a grown woman (if the baby is a girl) but I can actually see it being a very fitting name.

How do you like it? What would be your first thought if you met a little girl named Minnow?

What about Minka or Milla?

Inmyownlittlecorner · 18/08/2020 19:04

There’s a Minnow in my DDs class! She’s 11.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/08/2020 19:08

Minnow isn't just a fish, it's a mere tiddler.
Nickname for a small child if you must, but definitely not a given name.

MrsSpookyM · 18/08/2020 19:12

This is up there with Disney and Ballonz.

Bananalanacake · 18/08/2020 19:15

Almost as good as wanting to call a child Parsley.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 18/08/2020 19:16

Please don't.

Loveden · 18/08/2020 19:20

Recently I've become of the opinion that there's a troll (or three) on this board! Some of these names are just Grin
Minnow is a FISH ffs. A small, weedy, insignificant one at that.
Minna or Mina maybe. But not Minnow.

whatausername · 18/08/2020 19:24

Definition one is a type of small fish. Definition two is "a small or insignificant person or organization".

Oneandabean · 18/08/2020 19:25

Have you been watched Cursed by any chance. A girl on there gets the nickname minnow and I thought I was a really cute name too. unfortunately I couldn’t name my child after a fish. Too much bullying, especially as girls can be so bitchy.

SunshineCake · 18/08/2020 19:26

Minnow = scrappy little thing = not what I would hope you would want for your child.

DramaAlpaca · 18/08/2020 19:33

Only recently, @Loveden? There are loads on this board, it's well known for it Grin

zigaziga · 18/08/2020 19:37

I agree it is actually a nice sounding word.

Disagree that naming a child after a fish is the same as naming them after a tree or a flower etc though.

MikeUniformMike · 18/08/2020 19:40

Is her brother called Zander?

Sardine would make a pretty name for a girl.

MikeUniformMike · 18/08/2020 19:41

Minion has quite a similar sound.

GaraMedouar · 18/08/2020 19:42

It’s a fish ! So nope.

KaptainKaveman · 18/08/2020 19:46

Dd has a friend called Minna.
Please don't name your child after a fish.

KaptainKaveman · 18/08/2020 19:49

Sturgeon?
Carp?
Piranha?

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 18/08/2020 19:50

Please don’t! Minna is a pretty name and Madeline is lovely too.

You can always call her Minnow as a nickname...we have lots of nicknames in our houses... Rat is one of them, but I haven’t named a child Rat.🤣

scrivette · 18/08/2020 19:52

It is a pretty word but I don't think it would work as a child's name (and I like unusual names). I always thought 'Arowana' sounded nice as a girls name but again, it's a fish and wouldn't work!

RegalRags · 18/08/2020 19:56

Minnow makes me think of trouser minnow (small dick)
Nope nope nope.

midsomermurderess · 18/08/2020 19:58

Tiddler?

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 18/08/2020 20:00

I like the sound, but yeah, it's a fish. What about Merryn? It's Cornish and my favourite girls name right now!

fantasmasgoria1 · 18/08/2020 20:00

Minnie? Like the actor Minnie driver?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 18/08/2020 20:08

A minnow! A minnow! I have him by the nose! Said Mr Jeremy Fisher.

Is what I think of.
