Is it dated? A bit plain? My DH loves it and it fits all our criteria but I’m just not sure if I love it or if it’s a bit blah.

Any suggestions for a middle name to modernise it a bit? Something long I was thinking like Mary Clementine. Any ideas welcome

I like it but the Mary at my school was always called Virgin Mary and it was really awkward all round when she got her first boyfriend as you can imagine
Problem with the name Mary is that it's never really used anymore except in association with "the Virgin Mary". Really unfortunate

Whatsyourflava · 11/08/2020 23:49
  • as in, the only time you hear the name Mary is when you're being taught RE and "the Virgin Mary" will be the only Mary anyone/most people have heard of
willowtree81 · 11/08/2020 23:52

I think it's just lovely. We considered it, it's my Grans name. I like the idea of hippy nature middle name.

ShellsandSand · 11/08/2020 23:53

Love it. Reminds me of the little girl in 3 men and a baby/lady.

ShellsandSand · 11/08/2020 23:54

Obviously only using that as a reference as you don't often hear it for young girls anymore. I know plenty of other famous Mary's Grin

SoMuchToBits · 11/08/2020 23:58

I like the name Mary. My son (who is 19) knows two girls his age with the name Mary. Neither of them seem to have a problem with it.

june2007 · 12/08/2020 00:04

A good clasic name.

janetmendoza · 12/08/2020 00:05

Love it Mary Clementine is great

SE13Mummy · 12/08/2020 01:52

Mary is a beautiful name - we nearly used it for DD2 but didn't as it's DD1's middle name. I only know one teenaged Mary and can't think of any younger ones.

For middle names, your idea of something less traditional is a good one. Clementine is a good fit but I think lots of three+ syllable names would work e.g. Rosalind, Imogen, Indigo, Sophia, Louisa, Isolde, Lavender, Tallulah.

Owleyes16 · 12/08/2020 02:02

Perfect. Not too common, not too dated, simple, beautiful. Nothing to complain about! I feel it works best with 3 syllable+ middle names ending in -ah sound. Lydia, Louisa, Amelia, Francesca, etc.

ILoveStickers · 12/08/2020 05:32

I like Maria even more, but Mary is lovely.

I think I'd follow your instinct to have a hippyish/less traditional middle name. Because the only problem with Mary + another saint's name is you sound either like a nun or a European monarch. So I would avoid saint's names, myself, and go more pagan. Grin

Mary Robyn or Mary Clementine is great.

Mary Astrid
Mary Niamh
Mary Briar

Just not Mary Rose!

Tlollj · 12/08/2020 05:35

I like Mary. Love love Clementine

Sunshine1235 · 12/08/2020 07:43

@ILoveStickers our other top girls choice is Rose but the middle name we have with it wouldn’t go with Mary. But yes sadly can’t use it with Mary 😝 you’ve put your finger on the issue though and you’re right pagan is the way to go for the middle name.

@Whatsyourflava thanks that is worth considering.

Thinking about pitching Mary Clementine, Mary Autumn and some of the others to DH. Is Merry Autumn a problem? It’s not really a phrase is it?

SE13Mummy · 12/08/2020 08:34

Merry Autumn isn't a thing so I wouldn't worry about that!

CaffiSaliMali · 12/08/2020 09:01

I like Mary Clementine.

Mary Evangeline is nice, but sounds quite religious. Was going to suggest Mary Josephine but then remembered Mary and Joseph, so maybe not! Grin

Mary Charlotte
Mary Alexandra
Mary Elizabeth
Mary Rosalind/Rosamund/Rosanna
Mary Susanna
Mary Caroline
Mary Isabella

Nature ish names - Mary Laurel, Mary Saffron, Mary Lyra, Mary Larissa, Mary Cadence, Mary Coralie, Mary Cassia, Mary Brooke, Mary Faye, Mary Pearl.

Theforest · 12/08/2020 09:08

I only know one younger Mary who is about 25. It doesn't feel like an older name. Quite cool I think.

Sunshine1235 · 12/08/2020 09:42

@CaffiSaliMali I was thinking Mary Evangeline too until I realised it was probably a bit over religious! Love Alexandra
