Name for our boy - Isaac, Jacob, ???

Hello, we had a little boy three weeks sooner than expected due to early induction and are struggling to decide on a name. My lead contender was Jacob but now he’s arrived, he’s looking more like an Isaac, I don’t know why. Foolishly today we told our DCs that we are thinking of calling him Isaac and now that’s what they’re calling him although I feel like we hadn’t completely decided! Aargh. Need to make up our minds fairly speedily.
What do people think of these options? Any other ideas? Our surname is Wood.
Jacob / Jake
Isaac
Alexander - I don’t love Alex though!
Joseph - though not sure about Joe
Sam - but don’t love Samuel as the long form
Arthur - family name, might go for this as middle name
Also having stupidly googled Isaac far too much, people say children might be teased because Isaac = ‘I suck’ which obviously with our surname could be a bit of a problem. I would literally never have thought of this. Is it just a MN thing??

@Grufallisfriends

My ds is 14 and knows a Beau and a Byron so your ds will be growing up with children with far more unusual names

But there's nothing tease worthy about Beau or Byron.

But there is with Isaac Wood. I wouldn't risk it.

But there's nothing "tease worthy" about Isaac per se. If we're thinking so off the wall as to think Isaac could be made into "I suck" then any name especially a slightly unusual one could be used to tease. With Beau, kids could ask where his arrows are or as Beau means (i think) beautiful, that's open to teasing. Along the lines of "I suck" Byron coukd lead to kids saying. "He's bi" etc. As far as I am aware these things haven't happened which is why it won't happen with Isaac. Re the Wood surname most of his peers will grow up knowing his name so on the chance they make the Wood connection when older, they will be used to his name so less likely to suddenly start teasing about it.

I have an isaac, so obviously love the name.
He is 8 and has never been teased about his name, he is the only Isaac in his school despite it being quite popular now.
nobody has ever said to me or him it sounds like I stuck.

I think isaac wood is fine.
Jacob and Alexander are nice too.
But if your not keen on Jake and Alex then I wouldn't choose for that reason

Congratulation btw x

Isaac is fine.
Isaac Wood is not fine. Please dont give him this name.

FeedMeSantiago · 10/08/2020 12:52

I would avoid Isaac Wood. I went to school with a Richard Everard who was forever known as Dick Everhard.

If you like Isaac how about Zac? Zachary Wood known as Zac is nice.

Some other old testament names - Ezra, Noah, Asa, Asher, Saul, Elias, Tobias, Amos, Joshua, Josiah, Jonah, Benjamin, Reuben and David.

OMG I think you must have been at school with my uncle Shock

I know an Isaac Wood. He’s fourteen. Never been teased (that I know of).

GuyFawkesDay · 10/08/2020 13:54

I think I'd avoid all I names (& I have an Isaac but a non-wordy surname)

Reuben
Daniel
Joshua
James
Jonah
Noah
Matthew
John
Mark

(I reckon the last 3 are due popularity revivals!)

All solid biblical names which would be great with Alexander as a middle name and Wood.

Thanks all. Lots of differing opinions and some good new ideas here! Am going off to have a think!

Why what's wrong the name Isaac Wood.Confused

Spidey66 · 10/08/2020 18:50

@awwlookatmybabyspider
Isaac Wood = I suck wood.

resm · 10/08/2020 18:54

I have a 3 year old Isaac and he loves his name! Never heard the association of “I suck” before - he sometimes answers to Ike though!

userabcname · 10/08/2020 19:10

I have an Isaac nn Zac. Obviously I like it! Not sure how people get to "I suck"...? Round here it's pronounced "I-zak" hence the nn. Anyway, it's certainly not something I've ever heard before with the name and I'm a teacher so have heard quite a few unflattering nicknames for most names!
I really like Jacob as well. Alexander and Arthur are both fab but I'm less keen on Joe and Sam. Congratulations on your baby!

Ladyvickster · 10/08/2020 19:24

Hi my son Isaac Wood is 14. He has never been teased about this name. In fact most people tell me what a lovely name it is. I also chose it as it means He who laughs and he does! There were 2 other Issac’s in his school year and never heard any issues for them either. In school it is Isaac W on registers etc as already pointed out. It often gets misspelled to Issac but that’s the only issue. If you love the name and it suits your baby when you met them go for it xx

Like I said earlier, my sons middle name is isaac so I've just had my two girls keep saying the name as I can't hear either 'suck' or 'zac'. We say it more of a combination of the two so I-zuc.
Anyway, I love Isaac Alexander

MyCatReallyIsAGit · 10/08/2020 21:50

We have an Isaac in the family - no teasing so far but you do need to pair carefully with the surname. I would probably avoid it with Wood - I think Jacob, Joseph, Alexander and Sam(uel) all flow much better with your surname and are equally lovely.

I would avoid any name where you don’t like the obvious nickname though - we avoided Jacob because I’m not keen on Jake.

CharlieBoo · 10/08/2020 21:54

Joseph is the best.. don’t like Jacob or Isaac

CharlieBoo · 10/08/2020 21:55

But I do really like Jake.. lol

babydisney · 10/08/2020 22:50
