Thoughts on Tristan for a boy? We live in NI if that's any relevance but I don't think it is lol.

I really wanted to name my son this but my other half said it sounded too posh 😩

loveacry · 04/08/2020 11:09

Love Tristan! Such a great name.

ChockyBicky · 04/08/2020 11:15

We had a Tristan at school and a teacher with a lisp and she couldn't pronounce it.

MadeForThis · 04/08/2020 11:18

Like Tristan. Well known but not over popular in NI.

MikeUniformMike · 04/08/2020 11:26

I know a Tristan. Name suits him. Just a normal pleasant middle aged man. He gets called Tris a lot.

TheRosariojewels · 04/08/2020 12:45

I like Tristan.

Mollythepoodle · 04/08/2020 16:12

Love it and Tristram too.

VenusClapTrap · 04/08/2020 23:43

Love it. Was on my list but Dh vetoed It. Sad

Boomclaps · 04/08/2020 23:48

It’s lovely. Interesting that there are posh connotations. I know two Tristans, both in their late thirties, both live in social housing, ones a bin man and the other works in a bookies. Both Love a Pint of strongbow, and watching the sports at the pub.
Kids at state schools. Both wear trainers a lot, like concerts, and rock music
Both absolutely lovely. But so not the same as Tarquin 😂

scrivette · 04/08/2020 23:54

I like it, I don't know anyone with that name.

Monstamio · 05/08/2020 08:39

It's a beautiful name, but means sadness, sorrow (French triste, Latin tristis) which puts me off a bit. The story of Tristan and Isolde is a tragic one, worth looking into if you don't already know it. Though it's not dissimilar to Romeo in that respect and that's pretty mainstream as a name nowadays.

Not my cup of tea, but it is ok.

Like pps, I always thought of it as a sort of Australian / Californian surfer type name, but a friend who was considering using it set me straight! Apparently it's a classical one due to Tristan and Isolde. So there you are. That was me (and others) told Grin.

Legends of the Fall. Brad Pitt in full long hair mode.

bananacustard01 · 05/08/2020 21:57

@Carouselfish legends of the fall was the film that gave me the idea Smile
Thanks everyone seems pretty positive, I love it but it's quite rare here so just wanted to see what others think.

I really like Tristan, and suggested it for my ds but other half said no way.
It reminds me of the film stardust

Mashingthecompost · 22/08/2020 18:51

It's a good'un. A friend used it and I thought, well played. I hadn't considered it at all, and it slipped right by me. (Not that naming babies is a competition at all... 😆😆😆)

twinkletoedelephant · 22/08/2020 18:54

Love it really wantsed it for one of my sons but foolishly talked about it before his arrival and was put off by my mum and mil.

Huge regret - he looks very much like a Tristan

Stella8686 · 22/08/2020 18:56

There a 'licker' at my school called Tristan 😂 🤮

alexdgr8 · 22/08/2020 19:07

no sorry.
the sadness meaning plus hooray henry connotations put me off.
conjures up rich kids making a mess trashing places because they can pay their way out of anything.
also spelling issues over the phone, re sounding like tristram.
and difficult for some people to say correctly.
it's a no from me.

sorryforswearing · 22/08/2020 19:24

Sorry I really dislike it. Always have. That shouldn’t stop you using it if you like it of course. Just personal taste.
