Can I get your very honest opinions on bryony ?

Does it sound like “Brian”?
Being told “it sounds like a female version of Brian” is off putting !

It is a bit Brian-y but Brian is a good name.

Oneandabean · 03/08/2020 19:37

I’ve only ever heard it said like brian-ee so to me yes absolutely sounds like Brian. But then that’s also my grandads name so I’ll always make that link.

Love it. Its such a beautiful but underused name

Cbeebiesrehab · 03/08/2020 21:12

A family members name who is affectionately referred to as Brian.

FawnDrench · 03/08/2020 21:16

Bryon is a really lovely name - I wouldn't have associated it with "Brian" at all, never even crossed my mind.

FawnDrench · 03/08/2020 21:17

Gawd - I mean Bryony of course - damn autocorrect!

TildaTurnip · 03/08/2020 21:21

Interesting so many don’t notice the ‘Brian‘ in it as all the Bryonys/Brionys I know pronounce it Brian-ee.

NoemiaElara · 03/08/2020 21:21

It's lovely! I know a Bryony and her nickname is Bonnie.

Crankley · 04/08/2020 16:06

I prefer Briony but lovely either way and see no link to Brian.

Cbeebiesrehab · 04/08/2020 16:09

I’m unsure how people don’t see the link as Brian in the name. It’s an alright name though so I don’t think it’s a problem-just unsure how people can’t see the link.

I see no link and it wouldn’t ever occur to me. Bryony is a plant, so I think plant and a nice name for a girl. Brian is not a plant. It’s Irish, I think, or Celtic, and a boy’s name.
GoshHashana · 04/08/2020 19:30

I love this name.

Cbeebiesrehab · 04/08/2020 19:53

@daisypond no I understand there is no link in terms of their origin but there is in their pronunciation. It’s basically Brian with knee on the end. I’m not saying it’s not a nice name-it’s a family members. Just can’t deny the similarities.

Tummypudge · 04/08/2020 22:25

I know a Bryony about to start at school next month. She’s lovely most of the time, like all kids! I’ve never associated her with a Brian & I’ve never heard anyone link it to her either.
