Thoughts on Sabrina?

Natt99 · 22/07/2020 12:00

We recently found out we're expecting a baby girl 😊 However, there aren't many names we really love. I see the top 100 list and nothing really stands out to me.

We are both keen on the name Sabrina though but a bit concerned with the teenage witch connotations. Would this put you off?

Other names we think are ok for context are
Hope
Athena
Felicity
Isobel
Serena (I like but DH doesn't)

So any suggestions are welcome?
I know lots of Ava's, Freya, Thea, Clara, Mia so keen to avoid similar names.

Thanks

The teenage witch, springs to mind. However, it’s a pleasant name and it’s not like the teenage witch association is a bad one. People will eventually stop the association and just think of your child. It wouldn’t put me off.

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 22/07/2020 12:03

I do think 'teenage witch', but I also really like the name.

For comparison, I know a fab Clarissa who only gets the occasional 'explains it all' comment.

milienhaus · 22/07/2020 12:06

I would think teenage witch, but it’s a good association! Given there’s a new reboot it will be fairly prevalent in people’s minds. However, I knew a really nice Sabrina at university and within about a day I didn’t think of the connection any more when I saw her, so I don’t think it’s long lasting.

SnuggyBuggy · 22/07/2020 12:07

Sabrina the Teenage Witch is the first thing I think of but I still quite like it. It's unusual without being weird, it's not a "made up name" and people will be able to spell it. I'd go for it if you like it.

Shmithecat2 · 22/07/2020 12:08

Teenage witch. Or Boys Boys Boys. So not great.

How about Sabina?

Shmithecat2 · 22/07/2020 12:09

Felicity is lovely.

IndiaMay · 22/07/2020 12:11

I grew up with a Sabrina. I'm almost 30 and shes the only one I've know and I love the name. It's probably a bit identifying but she had the nickname Sibby.

FriedasCarLoad · 22/07/2020 12:16

My first thought was the lovely Audrey Hepburn film... I think I have rather dated tastes and cultural references!

I think it's such a lovely name. Elegant and classic yet underused, and feminine without being fussy.

userabcname · 22/07/2020 12:16

I love all your names! I think Sabrina is great and wouldn't worry about the connotations. I also love Felicity and Serena. My suggestion is Celeste.

ElisaMay · 22/07/2020 12:22

Just make sure she isn't blonde!😂 My DH is a fan of the name but couldn't because of that!

Shelby30 · 22/07/2020 12:24

Ok so I loved loved loved Sabrina the teenage witch. It would spring to mind for me.

Don't let it put you off though I think it's lovely and not overly used.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 22/07/2020 12:24

It reminds me of my favourite Charlie's Angel from the original 70s series, she was cool 😎

micc · 22/07/2020 12:39

I love the name Sabrina! So underused!!
I do think of the teenage witch but kids her age wont, I went to school with a Sabrina and I didnt really think about it and I watched the show!!

My name is Isobel and the spelling is different to what most people are going for now a days! But I will say there is A LOT of izzys abou! I notice it more as it's my name and at the park it seems to be every other child is called it!!! Maybe it's just the area I'm in Haha

So I think you should go for Sabrina as is different but not too out there as everyone is familiar with the name :)

worstwitch18 · 22/07/2020 12:41

I like the name Sabrina! I don't immediately think teenage witch - I think of a Korean girl who was first violinist in my school orchestra...

Anyway, I think the name itself sounds good.

Natt99 · 22/07/2020 13:22

Wow I didn't expect such positive responses already, thank you!
Yes, we like Sabrina for a lot of the reasons mentioned here plus it has interesting/old origins.
Unless there is some genetic fluke she is unlikely to be blonde/blue eyed so won't look like the character.
@KatnissK DH loves Celeste so maybe this will be the middle name 😊

Haven't you got another thread about this name?
Sabrina is the goddess of the River Severn, IMO a lovely name.

Natt99 · 22/07/2020 17:01

@averylongtimeago no not me! Someone else asking if Sabre is a suitable name 😂

Boys, Boys, Boys or Charlie's Angels.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 22/07/2020 17:18

Ugh really annoying woman on my course who took everything including herself very seriously. Shame because I quite like the name! From your list I like Hope.

mrs87 · 23/07/2020 06:31

I have a friend called Sabrina. Never made the connection with the teenage witch, despite being of that era and loving the programme! To me they're two completely separate people. Children these days wouldn't even remember! Parents might, but I think it's a nice nostalgic association, nothing negative about being linked to it.

I think it's lovely and underused - and I think Sabrina Celeste is a lovely combo. Go for it!

Standrewsschool · 23/07/2020 07:30

Sabrina was my favourite Angel from the original Charlie’s Angels, so it’s a yes from me (#showingmyage).

GoshHashana · 23/07/2020 09:54

Stripper name.

kazza446 · 23/07/2020 09:56

I prefer serena! Sabrina makes me think of the teenage witch. What about Cisely?

userabcname · 23/07/2020 10:43

@Nat99 oh how lovely! No one ever usually likes my suggestions!

BerylSilverstone · 23/07/2020 11:00

I really like the name Sabrina! Felicity is lovely too xx
