Solomon Penn or Archibald Franklin?

Expecting in 8 weeks. He's our third little boy and his brothers are Alfred Clayton and Edwin Moses. We like names that are a bit "stodgy" and old-fashioned compared to many people's taste. We're also in the US, if that makes a difference. I am sometimes surprised by how different name popularity can be in the US vs UK!

Anyhow, we've waited longer to do a final decision on this name than for either of our other two. All of the names we have used for our two older boys, as well as the names under consideration for the new baby, are family names -- which means we don't want to do too much "have you considered x name that's very similar to the one you picked," unless it's so similar that the "named after" still sticks.

Anyway, which do you prefer: Solomon Penn or Archibald Franklin?

Solomon Penn. Especially if you do Alfie at the moment as Archie is a bit matchy.

Sorry I know there’s always one that says something different - I would go with Franklin as the first name if I was in your shoes.

I wouldn't have two Mr A Surname in a family - the amount of times my mum and brother have opened each other's post - but I'm not a fan on Solomon. I like Franklin as a first name. You wouldn't think of switching Franklin Archibald or Franklin Penn?

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2020 11:42

Solomon Penn. I can't say I like Solomon, but it's preferable to Archibald and I really love Sol.

flooredbored · 17/07/2020 11:42

Solomon Penn has a nice ring to it. I think Archibald Franklin is a bit of a mouthful.

MikeUniformMike · 17/07/2020 12:38

Solomon Penn. I dislike the names Archibald and Franklin.

Solomon's nice.

I really like Franklin as a first name with your other sons. Franklin Penn or Franklin Archibald.

Both great names!

You can’t wrong wrong with whichever of those you choose. I probably marginally prefer Solomon Penn, though.

Solomon Penn. I live Archibald but hate Archie. Edwin is my fav boy's name ever.

I have a Solomon! He'll be Sol before you know it, which I like.

daisypond · 17/07/2020 19:25

Archibald prob. But can’t say I’m keen. Solomon is very different to your other DC names, so it’s jarring to me.

Prettyprettyplease · 17/07/2020 19:28

I like Solomon, but I'm not so keen on Penn. I like Solomon with either Franklin or Archibald as a middle name though!

Quizeerascal · 17/07/2020 19:45

Solomon Penn or even Solomon Franklin. Archibald sounds/looks too similar to Alfred imo especially if they get shortened to Alfie and Archie

Shelby762 · 17/07/2020 22:08

Archibald Franklin 💙💙

My first thoughts were that you were naming a 19th century American president, but that seems to be what you’re aiming for. They both work.
