What do people think of Robert?

Me and DW are quite liking this name right now and it’s versatility of nicknames (Rob, Robbie, Bob, Bobby). What do people think of it? For additional context; he already has two brothers called Nicholas George and Peter James. His middle name will be Samuel or Joseph, surnamed Wilson. Thanks Smile

It's a classic name like your others.
Nick, Pete and Rob....that works.

VinoOlive · 16/07/2020 16:36

I know two Roberts that are 4. I think it's a good name, everyone knows how to say it and spell it, it suits your other children's names, plus lots of nickname choice. I have a Thomas which is similar to Robert.

I like it.

Bertie can also be a nickname.

Ducksurprise · 16/07/2020 16:38

Love it, goes well with your DS names.

CoddledAsAMommet · 16/07/2020 16:42

I absolutely love it, it's the perfect boy's name. Gorgeous.

MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2020 17:46

It's fine. A friend has a son called Robert

Philip is nice.

MarianaTrenchAgain · 16/07/2020 17:48

I love it. The only ones I know are my DB who is in his mid 60s and my friends son in his mid 30s. I’m probably biased as they are both wonderful men. I think it works for every age and is a classic.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 16/07/2020 17:49

My secondary scholl has 1 Robert and a handful of Bobby's. It hasn't quite come back in fashion like the Alfies and Archives but it's a solid name.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 16/07/2020 17:49

Haha Archives is quite a name - Archie

MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2020 17:49

It's a refreshing change from the -ie/y names.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 16/07/2020 17:50

Dear God my spelling, glad I teach science and not English school

CorianderLord · 16/07/2020 17:53

Lovely just make sure he's a Rob not a Robbie or Bob.

It's DP middle name

MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2020 17:57

Ooh, I'm going to suggest Archive on a unisex name thread.

Rob and Robbie are nice, not so keen on Bob and Bobby, but Bertie is awful.

Bill1987 · 16/07/2020 18:01

@CorianderLord I can’t really “make sure” he’s a Rob when he’s an adult, by that point they’re kind of free to do what they like so it’s up to him if he’s Rob/Bob.

@MikeUniformMike lmao that would be a laugh.

I agree - I don’t really like Bertie.

Sorry I hate it!

But only because all the Roberts and Bobs I’ve ever met have been sexually inappropriate/creepy/pervs and it really put me off the name!

I did teach a delightful little Bobby when I was a student teacher. Without a word of a lie, I bumped into him again when I was in my 30s and he was 20 and HE became creepy and pervy towards me Envy.

Purely anecdotal obviously!

whatshebininagain · 16/07/2020 18:07

I like the fact it's versatile too, with ready-made diminutives. You often hear parents say they picked a name because it "couldn't be shortened" and the kid ends up with a weird nickname at school.

WithIcePlease · 16/07/2020 18:07

I really like the name Robert and surprised at how low it has been in the popularity rankings but maybe that's changed since I last looked
BIL is rarely shortened to Rob - not that he'd be precious about it but just seems to always be addressed as Robert
The Robert where I work is usually referred to as Roberto 😂

Danniiaddy · 16/07/2020 18:07

I work with a Robert and he likes to be known as Rob but many people call him Bob and he HATES it! Even though he corrects people, he still gets called Bob and it makes him feel old.
That’s the problem with names where there are many possible nicknames.
I’d reconsider.

Grufallosfriends · 16/07/2020 18:10

Robert, Nicholas and Peter are great names!

HalfBloodPrincess · 16/07/2020 18:11

My nephews name. He goes by Bob to his friends but His little brother calls him Bobert

Grufallosfriends · 16/07/2020 18:14

Shouldn't it be Rob as nickname?

It's Robert and not Bobert Grin

iklboo · 16/07/2020 18:15

BIL1 - fab bloke. Love him to pieces. And we can genuinely say to DS "Bob's your uncle' Grin

Hawkinsfirefly99 · 16/07/2020 18:16

We have a 2 year old called Robert. I love the name. It's a classic. I got the idea for Robert after watching the BbC Gunpowder drama with Robert Catesby being the main protagonist.

It's a classic underused name.

daisypond · 16/07/2020 18:18

Yes, it’s good.
