Using boys name that's already in the family?

The only boys name I've ever loved is Louie...
But it's already used in my Partners family, his cousins boy is a Louie, they live up north, and we see them maybe a year..

Too weird to use it?

I think it’s fine if you aren’t close. Maybe spell it Louis to make a further distinction?

Soubriquet · 11/07/2020 21:02

No.

My dad had a half brother who has a son with his ex wife

I haven’t seen my cousin in years. Seriously since he was a toddler and I think he’s married now.

Dh had heard the name from a tv show and loved it. We called our ds it even though my cousin was the same name

I had several family members asking why did I call him XX when uncles son is called xx

Cos we liked it

Once a year is rare! No way would I let that stop me.

pinkpinecone · 11/07/2020 21:32

It's a lovely name. I think it's fine as you're not close and it's also fairly popular name anyway, it's not like they will share are really unusual name like Merlin or Mungo.

bridgetreilly · 11/07/2020 22:05

The children will be second cousins. It is completely fine that they have the same name.

Grufallosfriends · 11/07/2020 22:53

If Louie is the only name you love and if you only see the other Louie once a year, I'd go ahead and use it!

Flappingflamingo · 12/07/2020 16:04

My son is called Sam, I have a cousin called sam, don't see him often at all, but nobody thought it was weird

Whatsyourflava · 12/07/2020 16:13

Go with Louie

It's fine to use! Great name

Whatsyourflava · 12/07/2020 16:13

They may well be quite touched that you also like the name @Ducky1900

MikeUniformMike · 12/07/2020 17:19

Spell it Louis, it is classier.

Several of my cousins have used certain names for their children.
The children are each other's second cousins. It's a bit weird where the firstname and surname is the same.

Ducky1900 · 12/07/2020 18:26

The cousins name is Louis, and the son Louie... Think it's too close to home.
Hopefully it's a girl and I won't need to think about it 🙈

Spell it properly and it should be fine.

kittenpeak · 13/07/2020 00:49

I'm of the view you can name your child whatever you want. If you like it, have it.

If your cousin doesn't like it, they can change their son's name. Seriously.

Our sons name is the same as his second cousin on my husbands side. I'll be honest it was the only boys name we wanted, both my dh and I loved it and it was decided from when I was 7 months pregnant that if we had a boy that would be his name.
Looking back I guess we should really have spoke to them first, as bad as it sounds we just didn't think at the time. Luckily they didn't mind and their son didn't mind either. Due to circumstances we have never seen see them often at all, so it doesn't make a great deal of difference.
Tbh if it was a close family member then I wouldn't, but if not then I'd say it's fine.
