Couldn't sleep last night. We had settled on Penny for third and last child but in my sleepless hours I remembered that the disgusting clown from IT is named Pennywise. Now I can't get that out of my head and the name is completely ruined for me.

Can you please help me find a name that has the same feel as Penny. We like Daisy too, but I really found Penny a bit cooler and not so cutesy compared to Daisy.

You don't have to suggest Penelope as Penny would have been the full first name. Grin

I don't know why naming our 3rd child is so hard! Envy

Teacher here. Taught a few Penny's no one has every associated it with Penny Wise. Lovely name x

AdultFishcakes · 06/07/2020 15:54

I like Penny but I can understand your displeasure at making that connection - but as a PP said she will be YOUR Penny and the association will evaporate.

Names I think are in the same bracket are:

  • Poppy
  • Sally
  • Tabitha
  • Suzy (given name Susannah)
Myshinynewname · 06/07/2020 15:59

I've had a friend Penny for over 20 years and have never, ever associated her name with Pennywise. It's a lovely classic name.

WhoWants2Know · 06/07/2020 15:59

Penny is fine. I know a Penelope and she's always called either Penny or Pen-elope to rhyme with cantaloupe.

LarkDescending · 06/07/2020 16:03

Libby, Ginny, Peggy?

KaTetof19 · 06/07/2020 16:05

I think your overthinking it because the clown is male

Only in the films (haven't seen the new ones). In the book Pennywise is actually female!

That being said, even as a massive Stephen King fan I wouldn't make the Pennywise connection with a little girl named Penny. If anything it makes me think of the Penny Crayon cartoon.

Wait until you meet baby, you might look at her and Penny just works for you and the clown disappears as a brief connection

Theforest · 06/07/2020 16:06

Go for Penny!

NeverTrustASmilingCat · 06/07/2020 16:08

I think of Penny from Bolt, rather than Pennywise.

Don't do it, you have seen it now and you will not unsee it. Forever you will silently add the wise. I loved the name Seth, but I could not forget the old codger from Emmerdale farm. Could not get past it.

AldiAisleofCrap · 06/07/2020 16:14

How about Bonnie?

MintyMurray17 · 06/07/2020 16:38

Another vote for Penny! I have only ever known utterly wonderful Pennys.

Similar style names: Nina, Eliza, Martha, Bea

I have a friend with the full name, but known as Penny.
I think of her as 'Penny's from heaven' .

Turkeydrumstick · 06/07/2020 17:12

I never thought of Pennywise when I read your OP. I think it’s a nice name but my grandparents ruined it for me, they’d always say they were going to spend a penny when they were nipping to the loo.

sibbys · 06/07/2020 17:51

@QwertyBert

I know a 6 year old called Penelope Wise. Apparently I’m the first person to mention PennyWise the clown. 🤷‍♀️
Wow!!!!!

Never watched that. Is it a nice character?

Oh no. I hope I will get over it! Really loved the name until last night.

I would never have associated Penny with the clown. Keep Penny its a great name.

PennyArcade · 06/07/2020 18:02

I have never been referred to as Pennywise. I’ve had the usual “penny farthing”, “pennytuppence” “Find a penny pick it up” “spend a penny”.... but never “Pennywise”

I have an acquaintance who has ruined the name for me - I don't like her. But the name is quite cute Bear

Polly
Phoebe
Heidi
Carrie

Orphlids · 06/07/2020 18:30

Suki? That was on our list, but sounded a bit rude with our surname, unfortunately. Molly and Suki sound rather good together.

DaisyDoo1919 · 06/07/2020 18:33

Well I have a daisy and penny is name of next baby! So I have to say you have excellent taste!₩

What else is on your list if I may ask? Might get some inspiration!
