The Fabian Society was named after a famous and very clever Roman army commander (Quintus Fabius Maximus) who defeated his enemy (Hannibal) by using clever 'delaying' tactics (ie small-scale raids), rather than outright confrontation, in which he would very probably have been defeated. The Fabian Society aimed to use similar gradual, step-by-step tactics to achive their political reforms. They did not want battles or revoutions.

I don't like it.
Pretentious

daisypond · 06/07/2020 18:07

I like it

firstimemamma · 06/07/2020 18:08

I like it.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 06/07/2020 18:09

I like Fabian...

Sorry, but Fabia just makes me think Labia 🙈

MoominKitty · 06/07/2020 18:20

@Boireannachlaidir haha there was a girl called Fabia in my middle school, she was sooooo lovely, the rhyme potential didn't even register 😂.

123Dancewithme · 07/07/2020 01:04

Love it. I prefer the German pronunciation though.

RickOShay · 07/07/2020 09:39

Love Fabian.
Dh too boring sadly.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/07/2020 09:47

Love Fabian, reminds me of the lad from Stardust who's actually called Tristan. Dh vetoed them both. It's v posh.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/07/2020 09:48

@123Dancewithme

Love it. I prefer the German pronunciation though.
Which is?
Poppydaisies · 07/07/2020 09:52

In German it's Fah bian. Rather than Fay bian.

Like a long Aah.

Poppydaisies · 07/07/2020 09:52

Oh. And I really like it. I like both pronunciations!

MaggieFS · 07/07/2020 10:03

I like it. I know of the Fabian Society and I didn't think of that!

BeMorePacific · 10/07/2020 10:46

@LadyMonicaBaddingham all I saw was labia too!
I’m not mad on the name. x

zingally · 10/07/2020 11:44

It's okay... Not my taste though... Sounds a bit snooty/posh? I imagine a Fabian going to an expensive private school with a double-barreled surname. And Mummy and Daddy inherited their money from darling grandfather.

I've never heard of this Fabian Society people are mentioning...?

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/07/2020 11:50

I like Fabian. What’s wrong with a name sounding “posh”? Confused

PixellatedPixie · 10/07/2020 11:54

James is an excellent name and really good as a second name too!

blueskys72 · 10/07/2020 12:53

I like it. I used to know a Fabian with brothers called Caspian, Sebastian and Kynan.

Children just become their names and any 'poshness' etc is soon forgotten.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 10/07/2020 13:46

I like it.

I've never met one, but my DD had a friend called Fabiana.

Afternoonteapls · 10/07/2020 15:54

Some mixed reviews but I love it!

@blueskys72 wow love those names altogether!

Quizeerascal · 10/07/2020 17:10

I love it but some reason it's not v popular on mn

endlessginandtonic · 10/07/2020 17:16

I like it but my mind did very quickly go to politics ( but I'm a bit of a political geek)

MrsTribbiani · 10/07/2020 17:20

It’s a bit....wet. And posh.

I prefer Fabio

dementedma · 10/07/2020 18:25

James Fabian is nicer

VenusClapTrap · 12/07/2020 09:37

I like it. I have met two - neither of them at all posh.
