What’s your favourite shortening of Elizabeth?

I wanted to use Beth as an abbreviation, but unfortunately ds called her Lizzie from the moment she left hospital. Which I categorically did not want. Thanks, son.

Mind you, when I said this to a friend, she said “But you couldn’t call her Beth. She takes pages to die.”

In any case, now dd is 13, it’s quite clear that the rather more dignified Beth just wouldn’t have suited her. She’s definitely a Lizzie.

I do like Libby, though. But again, ds wasn’t having any of it.

Libby.

Lizzie for a little girl and Liz when she's older.

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2020 15:41

Lizzie.
I like most of them but they have quite different vibes.

Lisa and Bethan were very popular in my age group, but as standalone names.

Currently, I really like Bess and Bet. They seem sassy.

I think Prince Phillip calls the Queen Lillibet, which I love.

Other faves are Eliza, Bet / Bette, or Betsy. Loads of options!

I have an Elizabeth. She actually goes by a fairly ridiculous nickname most of the time (not far off from Betsy) but otherwise we use her full name. Lovely name.

Drogonssmile · 05/07/2020 19:00

I love the name (biased because it's my middle name and my mums name ) but there are sooooo many options for nicknames! Most of them lovely.

I like Libby the best but like them all (Beth, Betty, Lizzie etc) with the exception of Liz.

Hippityhoppityhappityvoosh · 05/07/2020 19:29

I love Libby and would go for Elisabeth rather than Elizabeth to avoid Lizzie (quite like Lissy)

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2020 19:40

I wouldn't spell is Elisabeth because it will be assumed to be Elizabeth.

I can think of several Bettys who are Elizabeth on the BC, and they never get called Liz.

Smile19 · 07/07/2020 18:41

Our Elizabeth gets Elspeth and Libby..
However at 2, she started calling herself Bess. She replies to all those names but she only calls herself Elizabeth or Bess. We would not have chosen that shortening and were surprised she declared one day she was Bess. We thought she was saying Beth (she was saying LibBeth for Elizabeth) but she was VERY clear correcting us...lol.

My point I suppose is you can go for a shortening but they may choose their own. We never had previously referred to her as Bess and no one else ever did. It was 100% her.

Whilst we didn't choose it, it really suits her and we love it now.

I knew a Zebbie at primary school. I also know an elderly and a little Betty.

sweetnosugar · 07/07/2020 18:48

Elsie!
I think Elsie is a beautiful name to in it’s own right.

Destroyedpeople · 07/07/2020 18:49

Buffy

Beth. Love Elizabeth, it was top of my list if I had a girl. Classic and versatile.

Joolsin · 07/07/2020 18:53

Betsy
