Hey everyone so just looking for people’s opinions really we are having a little girl and really struggling to decide on a name I really like Mabel Rose but my DH is really unsure as he said it sounds like an old lady I also really like Willow Rose but not sure if it’s become a lot more common the last few years and wondered what people’s thoughts are on the names he’s also not sure on the middle name Rose but we have a double sure name so I wanted something short and pretty x

I love Mabel! It's definitely due a revival.

bridgetreilly · 02/07/2020 17:27

Mabel is much nicer than Willow, imo.

Mabel June
Mabel Joy
Mabel Hope
Mabel Blythe
Mabel Dawn
Mabel Faye
Mabel Lark
Mabel Wren
Mabel Skye

I think Willow is nicer than Mabel

FizzyGreenWater · 02/07/2020 17:43

Mabel edges it. Willow is nice, but it's really popular. I'm going to take a guess and say that in 10 years time, Willow will be a Gemma-type name: pretty, feminine, started off as unusual, ended up bery humdrum.

Joolsin · 02/07/2020 17:44

I think Mabel is a lovely name, much nicer than Willow.

kenandbarbie · 02/07/2020 17:47

I prefer Mabel but I don't like rose as a middle name.

kenandbarbie · 02/07/2020 17:48

Pp suggested Mabel Joy, that's lovely and unusual.

Onestepup · 02/07/2020 18:23

I really like Willow, not so keen on Mabel.

BackforGood · 02/07/2020 18:33

Well, it is an old lady name, along with all the names that have been popular over the last 3 or 4 years. That's how names tend to work.

When I was born in the 1960s, my Grandmother was horrified at my name as she thought it was really old fashioned (as your dh is saying 'an old lady name'). I've never been in a class at school or a group as an adult with similar aged people, where someone else hasn't had the same name as me. So yes, it is normal for 'old lady names' to come back into fashion.

Sooobooored · 02/07/2020 18:35

I don’t like Mabel at all. Nor any of the granny chic names eg Elsie, Violet, Ivy,

scrivette · 02/07/2020 18:35

I really like Mabel.

Amor88 · 02/07/2020 18:39

Thanks everyone it’s really nice to hear other people opinions , i know whatever name we pick she will make her own and not everyone will always like whatever name we decide, Just hope me and my DH can agree on a name before she arrives 🤣 💕

Mabel is a gorgeous name!
Go for Mabel! Grin

Whatsyourflava · 02/07/2020 19:08

Mabel and Willow are both just so gorgeous @Amor88

I think you need to explain to your husband that Mabel would have sounded like an old lady name in the 80s when we were growing up but the name has come back into fashion. A young Mabel born in 2020 will be at school with Elsie's, Edith's and Alberts.

If you like Mabel you might also like Marnie, Martha, Molly or Margot

If you like Willow but worry about it being too common, how about Willa?

Whatsyourflava · 02/07/2020 19:09

Ps. Rose is a lovely middle name

Whatsyourflava · 02/07/2020 19:11

(Elsie Edith and Albert all now being top 100 names whereas they never were when we were growing up. Hopefully you understood my point. Names like Gemma or Steven (ie popular names from our school days) are now MUCH rarer than Mabel)

chocolicious · 02/07/2020 19:17

I always associate the name Mabel with an old lady.
My Granny was called Mabel, and if she was still alive she'd be over 100 years old.

4amWitchingHour · 02/07/2020 19:27

Mabel is coming back - friend called her DD Mabel in January. It's not going to be that unusual over the next few years!

Danniiaddy · 02/07/2020 19:41

Mabel is lovely. Willow in my opinion is a bit chavvy.

userabcname · 02/07/2020 19:51

I much prefer Willow. I don't like the name Mabel at all, sorry. Willow Rose is lovely.

IVflytrap · 02/07/2020 20:15

I like Mabel, and prefer it over Willow. It's become more popular for babies fairly recently.

On a baby, it won't seem like an old lady name, just as Emily or Ava don't now, even though they have both been both considered very dated or "old lady" in relatively recent history.

Amor88 · 02/07/2020 21:05

Thanks everyone I love the name Mabel Rose I think it sounds pretty and girly 🥰 I’m hoping DH will agree as I know once she’s her it will fit perfect, I love willow to but it is a lot more common then I would like, I have a unique name and loved that no ones else had it when I was at school. Xx

Another vote for Mabel Rose!

Kittymitty38 · 02/07/2020 22:29

Mabel is beautiful!!
Not sure about Rose as a middle name (I prefer it as first name!) x
