Could this name suit a child?

Dp wants to call our child after his mum. Trouble is her name is Maxine and I'm not sure whether it would suit a child? Middle name would probably be Victoria.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
YouFellAsleep · 28/06/2020 11:38

I wouldn't. It's lovely to have a middle name after someone, but not always as a first name. Do you like your MIL? Do you like the name? Victoria Maxine is much nicer Smile

Destroyedpeople · 28/06/2020 11:39

It's a good name.
Better than 'Lexie Mae' or 'Frillie Rose' or whatever dreadful girls names are popular now.
At least a Maxine could be taken seriously as an adult.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/06/2020 11:40

No. It's not a great name, and to me, doesn't suit a baby.

Cherrybakewellard · 28/06/2020 11:41

If it's good enough for Jessica Simpson then it's good enough for me Grin

Her child is called Maxwell.

Onestepup · 28/06/2020 11:43

I find it a bit clunky. How about Maxina?

Onestepup · 28/06/2020 11:44

(with Xina/Zena for short)

florababy84 · 28/06/2020 11:44

It's a perfectly fine name, quite unusual for a baby in this day and age. I know one child Maxine who's about 15 now though she's German.

Personally I'd use it as a middle name but if you like it, it's a good first name too.

user32742534 · 28/06/2020 11:52

Oh I love it. It's a strong name, not too radical sounding, Max is a cool nickname for a girl. My first thought was Maxine/Max the girl from Stranger Things.

123Dancewithme · 28/06/2020 11:55

I like it. Max is a cool nn.

CadburysTastesVileNow · 28/06/2020 11:55

Maxima?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/06/2020 12:22

Maxine Victoria is gorgeous. It's dated but who cares. It's also cool and refreshing.

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 28/06/2020 12:27

Maxine is competely dated.

PPs have given you other versions which, while rare, are less dated.

villamariavintrapp · 28/06/2020 15:33

I think there was a thread quite recently about Maxine as a baby name, but a lot of people said they instantly thought of Maxine Carr. Otherwise it's fine.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 28/06/2020 15:36

Well your MIL was a child once Grin
However the first thing I think of when I hear the name is Maxine Carr :(

Although Stranger Things might see it making a comeback

Whatsyourflava · 28/06/2020 16:05

Maxine car. I just couldn't

I really like Maxine. It has quite a modern feel to it now and a good strong sound. But I’m not sure about naming a child after your DH’s mum -not as a first name.

Cindie943811A · 28/06/2020 16:44

@Wheresthebiffer2. Maxine Carr is not a child killer. That is a libellous statement. I do not defend her behaviour but she was not found guilty of murder but of assisting the murder, her boyfriend, by giving him a false alibi.

Destroyedpeople · 28/06/2020 16:48

Whereisthebiffer i think you should ask for that post to be deleted. Maxine Carr was NOT a child killer and could easily be reading this.

Cindie943811A · 28/06/2020 16:48

Maxine has never been a tremendously popular name and isn’t to my ear as dated as such once again popular names as Maud and Edith and Agnes and Hermione etc.

whatausername · 28/06/2020 19:50

It's okay but it is pretty dated. Maybe it's the -ine sound? Marlene and Christine are dated too imo, Sabine not as badly. I'd give it as a MN. I generally think any name honouring someone should be a MN and not a FN but that is a whole different discussion!

P.s. I also see Maxine Carr's mugshot in my mind as soon as I read Maxine. Possibly because Maxine is a reasonably uncommon name.

sibbys · 28/06/2020 20:05

I LOVE Maxine. Go for it!

timetest · 28/06/2020 20:07

It’s a lovely name.
