What do you think of Melis?

I think this is the turkish version of Melissa and it’s pronounced meh-LEES.
Which one is better Melissa or Melis?
Thanks.

Are you Turkish?
I would have said Melis as Mel-is, had you not said.
I'm not keen.
Melissa is lovely.

Do you have Turkish connections?

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 24/06/2020 13:15

Even though the I with a dot is ee it’s still more like Mel - is with a bit more epiphysis but not as strong as the ee sound because without the dot it would be Mel - uhs.

I like it and think it’s nicer than Melissa but I’m Turkish. That said it isn’t such an out there name that appears particularly different in Britain even if there is no Turkish connection.

With regard to actual pronunciation you just tell people how you want it said and job done. I wouldn’t get too caught up in ‘people will think it’s said like this’ etc. I say that as someone with a name that is almost always said wrong to start with.

Did you mean emphasis, Merc?

I think the OP might not be saying the name in the same way as a Turkish person would, so it's a bit naff.
It would make more sense to get the right pronunciation or spell it Meliese or Melise.

I think you would have to correct pronunciation quite frequently as I think many would naturally say Mel-iss rather than Meh-lees. It wouldn't necessarily bother me but I prefer Melissa regardless.

Melissa.

My DC have a Melis at school, everyone pronounces it as Mel Us. I assume this is how she pronounces her own name. She is Turkish.

Unless you are Turkish or have Turkish connections, I would personally go for Melissa because I think you will spend your life correcting people for mispronouncing Melis!

Both lovely names though.
