Scandinavian Names

Very early to be thinking of names as we're still TTC but I guess it doesn't hurt to know we're at least on the same page as each other.

DP has Scandinavian heritage and surname so I'd like to honour that at least by using the Scandi spelling of relatively common names.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Sadly the two boys names I've always loved are both ruled out as one is a derivative of my XH's surname and the other is DP's name!

Give baby's its father's surname & when you are married then take it as your surname...so no issue abt using ex's name. I've just noticed thst you are TTC stage...no baby has arrived yet so you have time to get married surely if that is what you both want... and also lots of time to settle on a name...

Thanks @SionnachGlic. That's what I would always have defaulted to but so many people have insisted that the baby would need to have my surname that it panicked me a bit.

Yes we've got loads and loads of time; we're only tossing around names now because a) we're excited! and b) I wanted to make sure we're at least on the same page. I wouldn't want to be expecting and then find out he's always harboured a desire to call his firstborn Adolf or MoonUnit or something

If you want inspiration ask you dp to google name lists for his country (in his language) eg we have a 50 most popular names lists.

That's a great idea @giantangryrooster; I've googled it but only in English, so I'm getting British/American lists of names from that country, I hadn't thought of getting him to do it in his native language! Thanks :)

If you give your child a very scandinavian name, people might assume that he/she is scandinavian, when they are only half-scandi, and might not speak the language.

I wouldn't spell a popular first name in a different way. A name like Freja spoken with a scandinavian accent sounds slightly different to Freya.
Freja will get Fredge-uh by some in the UK.

The nordic names link has some names that I know, but they may be a bit dated.

Astrid seems to be very popular.

There is a Thor at ds school but its a lot to live up to

Get married first, it will solve lots of problems, including the surname.

@HowFastIsTooFast ♥️ Scandi names. Freyja, Ingrid and Eerika are all on my list although don’t think I’ll get away with Eerika, would be vetoed to Erika. Astrid, Ebba, Inge and Anneli are also lovely choices. Oskar is a good, strong name. Also like Jarle and Johan.

I'm a Freya in the uk and spend a lot of time being called Frere or Fridgea and often Claire on the phone. However I do like the connections to a culture the name represents.

I did get a lot of questions about my Scandi heritage which was unfortunately non existent. My parents just liked the name.
