Hello :)
I have just found out I'm pregnant and of course I'm absolutely over the moon. I understand it's v early for some people to be thinking of names but for me I just find it so exciting and really want to find something my partner and I absolutely love.

Ideally we would really love a Scottish name but we are open to others if we find something we love. Also aware this could change as my pregnancy goes on.
Something pretty for a girl and strong sounding for a boy. We also don't want anything that's really popular, as lovely as they are names like Isla, Iona, Lachlan and Lewis for example, are very well known and common to us.

We have a few ideas which are Scottish or Celtic I will list below but really looking for more ideas.

Thanks so much.

Girls - Alba, Marsaili, Saorsa, Vaila, Jura

Boys - Munro, Murdo, Murdoch, Carrick, Murtagh, Argyll.

Love Murdo from your boys list- what about Fraser, Lachlan, Ruairidh?
Love Alba for girls, what about Ailsa, Catriona, Eilidh, Morven, Rhona?

My son is Magnus which everyone says is a 'strong Scottish name' (although it's not truly Scottish!). I also like Struan, Ruaridh, Cameron and Hamish for boys.

For girls I like Heather, Alba and Mirren.

PocketFullOfPuddocks · 21/06/2020 11:57

I have a Vaila and I absolutely love her name! I like Magnus, Corin and Innes for boys, Mirren for a girl.

Diorissimo1985 · 21/06/2020 11:59

Morna and Eilidh
Struan and Ruairidh

CaffiSaliMali · 21/06/2020 13:26

Morven, Eilidh, Elspeth and Ishbel. If I was of stronger Scottish ancestry Morven and Ishbel would be strong contenders.

Alasdair is lovely for a boy.

florascotia2 · 21/06/2020 15:47

OP Forgive me if you have this link already, but if you want to check on popularity, then here are Scottish official lists of baby names in recent years www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/names/babies-first-names/babies-first-names-2019/list-of-data-tables

Isla, Freyja (Scandinavian really) and Eilidh are all in the top 25.

gamechangerr · 21/06/2020 16:33

Name changed for this but DP and I are also considering Argyll, not because of its Scottish connection but because of the HMS Argyll. We have quite some history with that ship! And the name is lovely. 10/10

Natmat1 · 21/06/2020 18:57

Congratulations OP!

My favourites are Marsaili and Munro. Lovely names.

EmmaC78 · 21/06/2020 19:14

Eilidh for a girl and Murdo for a boy.

LemonBreeland · 21/06/2020 19:16

I've always loved Eilidh for a girl. I know a Jura, but he's a boy.

Favourite Scottish boys names are Murdo, Magnus and Ford

ibizarocks · 21/06/2020 19:19

Morgen, Mirren or Marsaili for a girl
Struan, Gregor or Kerr for a boy

ibizarocks · 21/06/2020 19:20

That should say Morven not Morgen

Isawthathaggis · 21/06/2020 19:31

@gamechangerr
I hope you don’t mind me asking but how are you on Scottish history?

It was the Earl of Argyll that carried out the massacre at Glencoe. Grin are you aware that in a certain part of the country that you’ll be giving your son quite the connection?

Also, if he goes to Glasgow the Argyll Arcade is quite famous? He’d also be named after one of the best places to hide to escape the rain.

It’s certainly a strong name.

Isawthathaggis · 21/06/2020 19:46

OP you have a lovely list of names.

I’m a sucker for an advertising slogan though so if you say Carrick, I think ‘hotel AND spa’. Quite a posh one too.

I also thought Jura is a boys name? Brother to Eigg and Rum. Lovely name, but could be confusing.

I’ve always loved Eilish.

And Munro, but I am tall so You can imagine the jokes about a tall boy named Munro.

weebarra · 21/06/2020 19:51

I have an Alasdair, but Murdo, Innes and struan were all contenders.
DD's name has also been mentioned here, but I was also considering Vaila and Mairi for her.
