Naming our second daughter:

mamamemmmer · 15/06/2020 14:42

Hi!

Our first daughter is called Ada, and we recently found out we're having another little girl.

These are the names we have in order of how we like them:

Esther
Rosie
Etta
Hettie
Alma
Agnes

I'm pretty set on Esther but our friends are due a baby in just over a week and I know they have two 'E' names on their list - so need another name just in case!

Suggestions welcome xxx

Esther is lovely, sounds fine with Ava too.

I like Rosie but as a nickname. Ava and Rose/Rosalie/Rosamund/Rosemary sounds nice.

Hettie likwise sounds like a nickname for Harriet, Henrietta, or Hester proabably.

But hardly an important point as you can use Esther

SE13Mummy · 01/07/2020 00:20

I think Ada and Esther are fabulous names but I'm not sure I'd use them on siblings because of the similar end sounds. Maybe it's because I spent my childhood thinking my name was being called but it wasn't e.g. Lucy vs. Susie. When naming DD2, we deliberately went for a name that had a very different ending sound from DD1's e.g. Lucy and Kate.

Ada and Esther are okay together.

Ada &

June
Sylvie
Polly
Jillian (Jill)
Josephine (Josie)
Dora
Harriet
Betty
Mabel
Pearl
Ruby
Cleo
Florence

@SE13Mummy I felt the same to start with about the endings being the same, but I've warmed to it now and really like the idea! The same sound is what my husband was going for. We have two girls across the way one being called Ava and her sisters name has a different ending name with the 'y' ending and we don't want to be too similar.

Other name on my list is Agnes. But then you have the names starting with the same letter scenario 🙈

@babynamelover

9 names on that list are children my daughter goes to nursery with or of close friends children 🙈. Gorgeous names but not options for us right now! X

100% Hettie. It was my girls name for both of mine but I had boys.

Spied · 01/07/2020 12:54

I'm not sure on the similar sounding Ada and Esther.
It's like saying the same name over Confused

I like Ada and either Grace or Rose.

mamamemmmer · 01/07/2020 13:40

@Spied Gosh do you think? 🙁

I'm starting to worry now. Neither of us like Rose and Grace is a total no no (ex's name).

@mamamemmmer fab! I came on to suggest Elspeth, pleased you got your first choice. They go together beautifully

Zombiemum07 · 01/07/2020 15:26

Etta is lovely and the association with Etta James is fab! :)

userabcname · 01/07/2020 15:30

I think Ada and Esther go together well!

Spied · 01/07/2020 18:07

I just can't imagine shouting for 'Ada , Esther' at the park or up the stairsGrin
It's a bit of a mouthful to me and leaves me a bit breathless.
The only difference is 'A' and 'Es'.
I like Ada and love Esther but I'm not sure fan of them together and reading back your thoughts about the endings I worry you'd regret not choosing something else and that it would play on your mind.

mamamemmmer · 01/07/2020 19:50

@Spied We were completely happy with Ada and Esther but I'm a worrier in that other people may think the same as you and see it as too similar. Although dialect might come into it?

I like Rosie the best.

FelicityPike · 01/07/2020 19:55

Esther goes nicely with Ada.
I love it.

midwifeyNC · 01/07/2020 20:23

Rosie or Agnes

captainraymondholt · 01/07/2020 21:09

Ada and Esther are perfect together.
I don't

captainraymondholt · 01/07/2020 21:10

Sorry. I don't think they sound too similar at all.

resm · 01/07/2020 22:23

Ada and Esther are beautiful names together, in my dialect they aren’t similar at all (Irish, pronounce the -r). You should go for it if you both love the name!

eveningfalls · 01/07/2020 23:13

I thought Esther before your updates on it being the favourite, Ada and Esther just sounds right.

wishing3 · 01/07/2020 23:28

Love Esther! Saw a show recently where a character was called Esty and thought that was lovely. Could be a cute nickname option?

Spidey66 · 01/07/2020 23:37

I like Rosie and Hettie's ok, but not keen on the rest.

I like someone else's suggestion of Edith/Edie

FelicityPike · 02/07/2020 07:54

One of the best programs I’ve seen in years! I couldn’t stop until it was finished.
20viona · 02/07/2020 08:04

Etta out of that list.

hexagon01 · 02/07/2020 08:23

I think Ada and Esther sound brilliant together, both gorgeous names. I think if I had another girl she could be an Esther but ironically it actually genuinely doesn’t go with my other daughter’s name.
