Emily or Jane?

My friend is going to be having a girl soon. She wants to name her either Emily or Jane.

She’s going to name her after Emily Brontë or Jane Austen.

I’ve told her I prefer Emily.

What do you think?

Jane is number 53 of the most used girls names in the UK so far this year. It must be making a come-back!!

emilybrontescorsett · 17/06/2020 13:39

I don't know any young Janes.

If Jane enters even the top 250 girls names when the 2019 ONS data is published I will eat my hat. It was at #1272 in 2018, given to a grand total of 26 babies in England and Wales. Even the most stratospheric climbers of recent years, Luna and Arya, didn’t manage a jump of 1000 places in one year.

Are you looking at Nameberry? Those lists are taken from the number of hits the names get on their website, not the number of babies actually registered with that name.

Emily
Jane us very plain and also reminds me of the laziest person I know and also my MIL Grin

theredhen1 · 17/06/2020 14:11

Not keen on either but I prefer Emily.

Scruffyoak · 17/06/2020 14:12

My niece is called Jane. Lovely name.

daisypond · 17/06/2020 14:12

Jane is number 53 of the most used girls names in the UK so far this year.

It isn’t. It’s number 1272 for the last year available.

Lavenderblues · 17/06/2020 14:14

Jane is number 53 of the most used girls names in the UK so far this year.

That seems very high! Where did you find this statistic?

redwoodmazza · 17/06/2020 14:39

From those two, Emily would be my choice.

That's the link I'm going by. I'm not very clued up with these things though so probably my mistake.

ivykaty44 · 17/06/2020 21:32

Claire and Audrey are also on the top 50 on that list

worstwitch18 · 18/06/2020 01:15

@Followthelight99

The list you found Jane on is the nameberry baby names website list.

I went onto their website and it says:

Note: Nameberry’s popularity list is calculated based on which names attracted the most views of our website.

So it is entirely unrelated to what people are actually naming their children!

Kokeshi123 · 18/06/2020 01:21

I think that looks like it's some Nameberry set of lists, not a list for the country. Darkgreener and other sources suggest very few little girls are being called Jane right now.

z0fl0ra · 18/06/2020 03:56

Jayne/Jane is overused as a middle name (It’s mine Grin) but I think sounds lovely as a first name and will be unique without sounding made-up and desperate to stand out like a lot of names are sounding these days. I’ve always liked Emily but it is overused and has lots of names that sound similar. To be honest I love Bronte as a name but I know that’s not what you asked

Followthelight99 · 18/06/2020 11:52

Sorry, my mistake! (I'm thick when it comes to things like that).

JRUIN · 18/06/2020 11:59

Emily is a lovely name but so common nowadays. Jane is a pretty name too and she would definitely be the only one in the class so that would be my choice.

Whatsyourflava · 18/06/2020 12:27

@Followthelight99 not your fault I've been taken in by that Nameberry list before but like others have said it's not based on what people are actually registering their children as and it's a US site. It's usually the more unusual names that people search for so that's why you get such a random mix of unusual names on Nameberry's top 100 lists.
The fact Jane is so high on Nameberrys list does suggest it's going to surge though if a lot of people are looking the name up.

I personally prefer Emily ❤️

EuphieKat · 19/06/2020 02:28

I think Jane is definitely worth a revival. Along with Louise and Marie, almost all of my school friends had Jane/Jayne as their middle name. It’s pretty!

FagashJackie · 19/06/2020 02:38

I love both names. If I was pushed I'd go for Jane now.

Lweji · 19/06/2020 21:03

I've just watched a clip with a 5 year old Jane, Jimmy Kimmel's daughter. It is probably on the way to revival, at least in the US.

Lavenderblues · 19/06/2020 22:16

Emily is so so overused and dull now. Along with Amelie and Amelia.

So I vote Jane.

Lweji · 20/06/2020 09:23

She could go for Emily Jane, and everyone would end up calling her Jane because everyone else will be Emily.

Puppilangstrumpf · 20/06/2020 11:46

There are too many Emilys so I vote Jane.
