Hello All,

My husband and I are looking at names that can work well within the Western communities we live in but also root back to our Asian/Persian/Indian roots. We want a Boys nake starting with A or L letters. What does everyone think of Armaan (pronounced Ar - Marn) or Aryan?

Thank you!

Correction. It is pronounced Ar maaan! Not "man" and the Ar but should not be pronounced as "our" when spoken in a cockney accent lol

Aryan might always have unfortunate associations with Hitler and the Master Race for a lot of people.

BrokenBrit · 08/06/2020 17:19

Avoid Aryan!

Do you like Ayaan? I think it has a lovely sound.

FizzyGreenWater · 08/06/2020 17:19

Definitely not Aryan! This has hugely negative associations in the west - as Shania says, the 'Aryan' Race was the Nazi term for the favoured, white, 'master' race - so eugenics, Holocaust, far right extremist associations.

Armaan is lovely.

wizzywig · 08/06/2020 17:22

It may be easier to get away with aryan if you live in an ethnically diverse area. The meaning is lovely, but yeah, i think of hitler.

Alwaysundecided · 08/06/2020 17:38

Agree with other posters about Aryan,
I know a little boy called Aayan pronounced eye-an which is nice

Lotus8 · 08/06/2020 17:57

Thanks so much everyone!! I googled Aryan earlier today and was quite shocked with the association it had. Felt very ignorant that I did not know this. So I posted here to see whether it was that obvious and turns out it is. So thank you, I will definitely not be naming him that!

Thanks for the suggestion Ayaan, but already have a relative called that.

Armaan is nice. Definitely not Aryan.

GruffyLove · 08/06/2020 18:59

What about Aarian that's quite a well known name

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 08/06/2020 19:04

Aydan?

Lotus8 · 08/06/2020 22:34

Thank you for the link. Ameer is a beautiful name but not for us :)

With Aarian we would come a cross the same issues as Aryan no?

Personally LOVE the name Aydan but my hubby is not so keen. However I might have to add it on the list again. It does look nice written out too. Thank you

I like Arun, no idea if it’s seen as an old-fashioned name now?

Armaan is good as it shortens well - he’d possibly be Ari, Mani. It’s a great choice. The only thing I can think of is that it’s quite close to Armani.

So many lovely names OP, good luck (and with your lovely baby!!)

Lotus8 · 10/06/2020 00:47

Thanks Fizzygreenwater

Arun is something I never thought of. Thank you for the suggestion. And yes I like the short nick names that Armaan offers. Re the Armani bit, I know what you mean. If anything it will help people along when trying to pronounce but I would hate the nick name to become Armani lol

One of ds's friends is called Amaan.
I don't know if that's from a different cultural context (his family is originally from Pakistan) but it's very easy to pronounce and gets slightly further from the Armani pronunciation.

BinkySodPlop · 10/06/2020 10:51

I think Armaan is fine, but with my West country accent, it becomes quite "elongated", and I sound like a pirate! Smile. (Obviously not a problem for the majority of the UK!)

MittensTheSerpent · 10/06/2020 10:53

Armaan is lovely. Aryan has unfortunate connotations.

Lotus8 · 11/06/2020 17:40

Thank you! Yes I need to consider accents etc....I'll check out Amaan thank you

I love Arun.
Also really like Armaan or Amaan

TheFormerPorpentiaScamander · 11/06/2020 17:48

DS went to primary school with an Aryan. I never made the Nazi master race link, despite having extensively studied Nazi Germany Blush
It was just the name of his classmate.

Winkywoop · 11/06/2020 17:50

Beginning with L, I love-
Liyan
Lishan
Lachan

All also work with a double A I think

GrumpyHoonMain · 11/06/2020 17:52

Aarin
Amay
Aman
Amar

MoonlightDancer · 11/06/2020 17:52

What about Adaam, Ashran (Shortened to Ash), Adaan, Armaan, Arraan, Amaar thinking of all the kids names i've worked excuse the ignorance i'm not sure if these names have Persian roots....

definitely not Aryan though!

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 11/06/2020 17:54

I've known boys called Amaan and Aryan. Aryan was pronounced Are-Ian not Air--Ian so no one made any negative remarks.

Elouera · 11/06/2020 17:55

Agree with others: Aryan- definitely not!
Armaan- could easily get the nickname Armani, or just get called 'A MAN, A MAN' by other kids (although, they can make jokes about any name really)
Arun- not the usual spelling of Aaron, but still easy for English speakers to read and pronouce
