I'm a first time mum in South Wales and would be interested to know which boys names you've noticed being most popular at school at the moment, either in this area or generally in the UK.

Oliver
George
Arlo
Arthur
Frankie
Leo
Roman ( 2 born in the last fortnight)
William
Joshua

I wouldn't just rely on us random people
The office national statistics breaks down the names by area. You can you to their page and see in a map the percentage of boys born in 2018 called Edward in South Wales for example
Much more reliable

I'm from South Wales too VerityH!

I would definitely say:

Leo
Oliver/Ollie
Freddie
Arlo
Albie
Arthur
George
Roman
Theo/Theodore
Sebastian/Seb
Jake

Originally from South Wales so still have a lot of friends there. Arthur seems popular. Although I know a lot more girls born this year oddly.

Do you want to avoid popular names?

Have a look at the official ONS statistics, broken down by region.

Max, lots of little Max's around me. Though not near Wales at all!

I would imagine popular Welsh boys names - Tomos, Harri, Macsen, Rhys, Osian, Owen, Jac etc. plus names like Noah, Oliver and Charlie.

If you scroll down a bit you'll find the top 100 boys and top 100 girls names in Wales.

What kind of name are you looking for?

Ezra, Arlo, Raphael, Gabriel, Archie, Otto, Sebastian, Theo

I don't like any of them.

Knowing what’s popular at school is likely only to tell you what baby names were popular 5/6/7/whatever years ago. It’s no indication at all about what might be popular when a baby born now gets to school.

The government publishes data on popular names each year so you can check back to find out what was popular in 2008 to see what names are most common in 11/12 year olds, for example.

The surprise ones are names that seem to spring out of nowhere.
You see or hear a name, think Ooh that's a bit different, call your baby it, and when they go to school, several other children have the same name.

I think if you see the name on someone on tv or a celebrity that can happen.

You can enter a name on the ONS site to see if it is past its peak or is likely to get very popular.
