Ollie, Olly or Oli?

Thinking of naming our son Oliver but as tedious as it sounds my partner and I can't decide how to shorten his name.
I wanted the name Ollie but didn't think a nickname should be his real name 'on paper' and partner agrees, hence the name Oliver.

So how would you spell it - Ollie, Olly or Oli?

I'd go for Ollie.

If you aren't going to use the shortened name on paper, why does it matter how it is spelt?

Fiddlersgreen · 31/05/2020 01:09

I have an Ollie. He/we spell it that way but to be honest other people don’t seem to care and spell it however they like when they write him cards etc

iwannalendyoumycoat · 31/05/2020 01:13

My Oliver became Oli simply because by the time he learned to write the full name properly there was no way I was going to introduce another "new name" to spell! Write the first three letters ....perfect!

ladybird69 · 31/05/2020 01:23

I know Oliver who spells it Ole.

DramaAlpaca · 31/05/2020 01:25

I prefer Olly.

SquirtleSquad · 31/05/2020 01:27

My phone puts a red squiggly line under Oli to say it's spelt wrong. I would hate to have a child with a name or nickname that my phone tells me is spelt wrong every time I type it out.

Ollie looks right to me.

Aclh13 · 31/05/2020 03:03

Ollie seems OK on its own to be a name oli looks abit odd and olly looks like a miss-spelling. Have you thought of Oliver alternatives that could be shortened to these names?
Olander
Olbert
Olis
Ollin
Crisol
Erol
Olivander
Conolly

MrsMoggy · 31/05/2020 06:10

We have an Olly but that’s his full name. People spell it “wrong” with an ie all the time even family.

Onone · 31/05/2020 06:12

I prefer oli

Mumoblue · 31/05/2020 06:12

My brother is an Oliver and he spells it Ollie.
I used to spell it Olly, but obviously I take his lead on it.

Zoflorabore · 31/05/2020 07:08

My 17yr old ds is Oliver but pretty much everyone calls him “Ollie” which we chose as a spelling when he was little.

My nickname for him is Ols.

OnABeachSomewhere · 31/05/2020 07:14

My ds18 is Oliver and I spelt it Ollie when I shortened it when he younger but as he got older he changed the shortened spelling to Olly.

PotteringAlong · 31/05/2020 14:38

My Oliver isn’t shortened. He has always been Oliver.

wonkytonkwoman · 31/05/2020 14:39

My Oliver is Oli to everyone.

Destroyedpeople · 31/05/2020 14:40

They are all pretty bad tbh. It just sounds so .. wet.

Destroyedpeople · 31/05/2020 14:42

I mean Oliver is a perfectly nice name of course. It's just the shortening of it that sounds so.....moist.

LST · 31/05/2020 14:42

We have an Oliver. We use Ol, Ol Pol, Polly (no idea why), Ollie, Oli & Oly! I spose he will make his mind up when he's older how he wants his nickname spelt.
